It really is a must see when coming to Mongolia, though like the rest of the country, it will test your ability to forgive the sad state of the archeological sites. Even coming from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, all struggling even more than Mongolia, I saw far more work being put in to preserve important sites, and a far greater sense of respect for these vital historic places than I did anywhere in Mongolia, even in this town that bases the bulk of its economy on tourism dollars linked to said sites. That said, the people we met were warm and friendly, especially if you took the time to learn just a few words of their language, and we enjoyed our stay here a lot.
This is the historic ancient capital city of Karakorum that was built by Genghis Khan for the capital of the Mongolian empire. The capital city of Karakorum was on the Silk trade route. William of Rubruck as Flemish missionary and explorer, the well-known traveler, Marco Polo, and several other travelers visited this glorious fortress city of Karakorum. They described Karakorum was one of the most beautiful cities of the world as the city of the jewel. China's Ming dynasty ultimately pillaged, burned and destroyed the ancient capital city of the Mongolian Empire to erase the glorious ancient city to exist. If you are fascinated with the ancient history or history buff, it is well worth to visit this unusual place with an interesting scenery of the mountainous terrain in the heart of Mongolia.
A historical city and people there are friendly, and genuine. The cost for food, and renting a car are excellent. The snow is beautiful and all white covering the city and it’s just one night to change such scene. I could not get into the Orkhon waterfall and Ogii Lake because of big snow, the city itself is full of fun and a great experience. The driver helped to approach the main scenes even the car was stuck on the snow.
