Lilongwe is a peaceful city. Despite the fact the elections had just been nullified, the city was calm and people went about doing their business. The driving culture is not agressive like in other capital cities.
It was only an overnight stay, biut I am a Malawian living abroad.Facilities in Lilongwe are scattered, the city is still developing. Public transportation is mediocre and getting around is not easy, unless one hires a vehicle. The people are generally friendly and helpful to foreigners, but still be careful! Lilongwe is safe, especially during the day. I like the food court at the City Mall, nearly 2 kms away, though I enjoyed walking about at the NICO CENTRE Mall, leass than a km away. I also like to explore the World War Memorial, includiing climbing the tower (no elevator, but that's part of the fun). Nightlife is rather limited, though there are some promising joints which I just read about.
Plenty of choice of accommodation although if you want western standards you pay western prices. Locals are friendly traffic can be heavy in the city centre otherwise quiet. Airport is modern and about 30 mins from city, car hire easy and safe to self drive. Lake Malawi is lovely a short drive away a very worthwhile trip for a few days
Friendly people, but the ongoing elections saga made them look subdued. Nice, green city, though with limited dining and nightlife facilities. Life goes into sleep mode by 6.00 pm. We enjoyed visiting the memorial and going up the tower. The city is hidden in trees, good for a change. Moving around by public transport is not so easy, one has to use a hired vehicle.
Lilongwe shows the real culture and nature of Malawi: a very busy marketplace and busstation, very friendly but poor people, good supermarkets, fine woodcraft. On the other hand the government premises at Capital Hill show the absurd richness of the happy few.
Lilongwe is a very strange city with no real centre and huge green spaces between its scattered bits of 'town'. The most atmospheric part is area 2. Restaurants, banks and supermarkets are around 'game' shopping centre. Altogether not much to do.
