My only regret was that our trip was too short... I guess that means we will have to return. There aren’t enough great things I can say about this city. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. They have the best food, the best drinks, the best people! It is unfortunate that museums were closed during our visit but understandable all things considered. We are in the midst of a pandemic, after all. A few notable places to eat/drink: Quinta Brava - cooking classes and private dining. We loved our cooking class so much we did another before our departure. La Cueva - the cutest little mezcal bar. Ask them to make you a Mezcal Old Fashioned. This place was patroned by expats. Casa Oaxaca - make sure to make your reservations and to bring a full belly. The food was exquisite! Try the Mezcal Sour. Boulenc - the very BEST breakfast. Sit at the bar in the back. Jorge is the best bartender. Tlayuda el Negro - a local restaurant, great for late night munchies.
One of the favorite cities I visited in Mexico. The food, the drinks, the city, the people, all amazing! The city has so much character with colorful buildings, old churches, and lots of rooftop terraces.
This place is s gem and exactly what you want to see and experience in Mexico. The tours were excellent , the handicrafts are extraordinary and the people are awesome. I will be returning when they open up some of the other sites that were closed due to COVID.
Oaxaca offered incredible culinary opportunity--- from the street food to higher end restaurants, we found amazing food on every corner. We came during dia de los muertos in this covid19 environment and we still had the most amazing time, especially compared to other Mexican cities we visited during out trip (CDMX, Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita). The city took covid seriously, wearing masks, doing temperature checks, etc, but nevertheless-- you found folks and families out in the streets enjoying the nice weather and traditions of dressing up. It was so alive. It had a european feel to it as all the buildings had old colonial charm to them. You can explore on foot easily with no need for taxi often times. We tried Chapulines (dried grasshoppers with with a salty/lime flavor) here for the first time, huge deal here, locals love them. They're served at nearly every meal of the day. Try them!
Oaxaca City has a nice historical area as well as tours that can be taken for day trips. We found most people to be quit friendly, food and restaurants quite good. You are in the mountains with altitude of 1500 meters (almost 5000ft.) so climate is generally comfortable all year with cooler days and some cold nights in the winter, and warmer days with shirtsleeve nights in the summer. Check out the top ten restaurants in any list and try the best 5 you see regularly listed. Shop for the local artisanal products and enjoy one of the nicer cities in Mexico.
I love this city. One of the best places in Mexico. An amazing experience. The ancient culture is super interesting. Traditions, art crafts, places, the food, the mezcal (traditional drink). You can only love it and wish to go back again and again!
