Sandakan is not a city brimming with character and charm.

Sandakan is not a city brimming with character and charm. It is OK and you can find a small number of nice enough places to eat and drink, if you set your mind to it. I would not want to have stayed there more than one day and I won’t be going back anytime soon.

We used Sandakan as the gateway to Turtle Island and the Kinabatangan River. We had lunch in a central hotel which was fine, not a lot for vegetarians but the service was good. We could have spent a little longer there, it seems easy to get around.

Great little town, wouldn’t spend more than a day or two here unless you were using as a base to go and see the orangutans and rainforest discovery centre or island tours. Great water front dinners. Shopping mall and grocery store close to water front. Nice vibe.

It’s my home town and I have lots of fond memories. Fresh seafood paradise and amazing mixed cuisine with traditional Chinese, Malaysian food and Indian dishes. Everything in the food market is super cheap and fresh. The town centre is looking undeveloped and unloved.

Not much to do in the town or much to see and nowhere very nice places to eat/drink. Unfortunately it is quite run down so book a decent hotel to stay in and make the most of the experiences available in the area.

    Beautiful place. Lots of nature.

Beautiful place. Lots of nature. We visited the Borneo Sunbear conservation centre, The orang utan sanctuary, the Rainfoest Discovery Centre and the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Centre. All above were very interesting and nicely done. However, you do need a car to get about as distances are far from Sabah Hotel. Ride-sharing app (Grabcar) is a good alternative. Seafood is cheap, plentiful and yummy in the Chinese restaurants

We did 4 cruises with this hotel and saw all of Borneo's big 5 and much much more! Our amazing guide was enthusiastic and passionate about wildlife. He is also very respectful of the animals. The accommodation was an experience in itself set up a hill surrounded by nature. We loved it. There are rooms closer to the restaurant which we was supposed to stay in but I asked if we could go a little further away for more privacy. Glad they accommodated us!

Pool was huge but maybe because of the long MCO everyone is eager to jump in the pool, it was over crowded. There is no control of headcount allowed in the pool. Overall I find it over price, it may once was a very good resort in the pass and have high standard, but things are starting to get old, and worn out. Hotel should slowly replace the broken item or worn out item with a new one. For example, door nobs and lock and the priority one for me.

Apartment was spacious. Host provided all basic necessities for the 2 bedrooms and a kitchen. Security was pretty good. Contact with the host was provided. Washing machine was working great. While we were there in the first few days the host installed WiFi Internet. It worked great. It was nice to have a rice cooker and electric kettle in the kitchen. Balcony had a nice view and had a drying rack for our Laundry.

Hotel is very modern, rooms like new and whole place is spotless. Staff are brilliant, let us check about 6 hours early on 2 separate stays. They open the door for you. Tasty buffet breakfast with lots of choices included. Best hotel I've stayed in Malaysia. I'm surprised doesn't have a higher score/rating. Loads of eating places 5 mins walk away is a bonus. Pool also clean and great to cool off.

The staff was incredibly nice and accommodating. I work remote and after getting to the resort, found out the wifi didn’t work and I had no cell service (U mobile has no coverage here). the wonderful hotel staff let me use their hotspots so I could get work done. the price seems high for the area, but it was clean, the food was good, and the river was close.
