It’s a great base point for exploring wildlife around it. In the city itself I wouldn’t spend more than 2-3 days. The food is okay, the sights are interesting, the local people are quite friendly. I haven’t really found anything especially charming in Sandakan, but I’m sure its a matter of personal preference. I did the Sandakan Heritage Trail - you can get a map of it for free at hostels, hotels, travel agencies. The main mosque doesn’t really look like anything much, the museum seems abandoned, the temples and Chinese & Japanese cemeteries are worth seeing though! Agnes Keith’s House is pretty lazily furnished, it was quite interesting to see it but the sloppiness of the exhibition irritated a little (I know it was only 15RM but I’d rather pay more and feel like someone tried harder). The book that made Agnes Keith an important figure in Sandakan's history (The Land Below the Wind) is NOT available for purchase in the Agnes Keith’s house - which I think is a huge fail. You can only get it at some souvenir stores for 70RM or something - which is quite a lot for a book that was written in 1939 (unless you pay with USD or GBP, then I guess it’s worth it). The nearby English Tea House is alright; good food and nice view. The Trail is overall worth doing if you don’t mind the heat and want to see a lot of different (not necessarily beautiful) landscapes of Sandakan. As for all the wonders of nature available to visit around SDK - Kinabatangan River, Sepilok Orangutang Center, Sun Bear Rescue Center, Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, Rainforest Discovery Center - they are absolutely worth visiting, you won’t be disappointed.
A week in sandakan was just enough time. The wild life is all within driving distance - and a week gives you plenty of time to relax and see all the sights. Sandakan is a really friendly city - we hired a driver for most of our city excursions which was an affordable way for us to get around. My biggest regret is paying a tour company for a tour instead or getting our driver to take us - for the two of us it would have been as affordable and we would have had a more comfortable time if we had been accompanied by the taxi driver instead of the you company.
Sandakan is a small town with nothing much to offer except a couple of restaurants by the water (sim sim 88 restaurant). If you plan your trip wisely (unlike what I have done) you can go to Sepilok directly without staying in Sandakn overnight. But if you had to stay then the town, central market are good options to pass time.
It's a small city and there's not much to do there aside from visiting the nearby wildlife conservation centers. I still enjoyed exploring the city on foot and engaging with the locals who, despite not speaking much English, were happy to try to communicate and were genuinely warm and welcoming.
Stay in the city for one day and move out to stay either at the nature resorts along the river or at sanctuaries. The boat cruise is a must see, spot eagles, monkies and orang utans in their natural habitat. Visited the swift's cave , sorry forget the name but it starts with G and managed to spot a male orangutan calling out to a female. Priceless - nothing compares to seeing them in the wild. Wildlife guides were good too- they know their stuff these wild men of Borneo!!
Few things you've got to see in the area... Orangutans, sun bear and Rainforest discovery centre in Sepilok. Proboscis monkey in Labuk Bay. Chinese temple and Agnes Keith house with beautiful tea house in Sandakan town. Don't forget to have dinner at Sim Sim water village and ask for directions to the rooftop bar plus very cosy kopitiam (Chinese style cafe) in the city centre (same location).

We had big very comfortable appartmant with separate bedroom what we did not expect based on price. Beds and room was super, breakfast really good with fresh fruits, malaysian dishes and eggs served how you like. Location in the centre but quite at nice street with trees. Staff recommended tourist services by agent Mr. Lim, we bought very good 3 days 2 nights trip to Kinabatangan River with accomodation in Borneo Natural Resort. If we come back to Sandakan we would stay in Sandakan Hotel.

It was a nice room and very comfortable. The hotel is right behind an old apartment so we can see a snippet of their living room from the hotel. Though sounds creepy, it was quite an interesting view because I like old buildings. Don't worry, we didn't actually see what they were doing because it is quite a distance.
