If you are interested in history, or just beautiful surroundings, Delft is the place to be. The canals are interacting all over the city. The historic city center is not that big and there is walking distance to everything you need. Interesting museums, views, and restaurants.
came over to Holland just before the virus outbreak got serious . had a good stay in Haarlem , but by the time I arrived in Delft the situation got very real quick . only had a day or so before cafes , restaurants , museums , most shops closed up . scary to see , had to pack up and try to make it back over to the US abruptly .
Delft is romantic, historic town with beautiful architecture. The Canals are lined with charming little historic buildings, that have their own individual note. A must-see are the two main churches Oude and Niew Kerk. Entrance of EUR 4.50 is for both churches and the tower in the Niew Kerk costs extra, but it is worth the climb (ca. 370 steps) to take in the breathtaking views from the top. There are plenty of cozy restaurants located throughout the town. The nice thing: I arrived on a Sunday, and, not like their neighboring country Germany where the sidewalks literally "roll up" from Saturday afternoon untill Monday morning, I was able to go food shopping. What a delight !!! I love the Dutch friendly and easy-going mentality, too.
Delft is only "open" 3 days out of the week, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the other days, things are closed, closed and closed. So if you come on those 3 days, you will be able to go on tours, and go to restaurants. Few things open before 10AM, and more 11 AM. Many stores close at 5PM. Some restaurants open sometime after 5, which in Delft time means, we might be open by 6. Basically you have small "windows" of times to do things in Delft, and you have to pick and choose. Google maps (GM) is not precise enough to put you on the proper side of the canal, and the GM route will eventually get you there, but you could have done much better if you knew your compass heading and the general direction of your destination. Pay attention at all times for bicyclist's ! they fly down the streets, and everywhere, a one-way street is not a one-way street to someone on a bicycle. The car and truck drivers are awesome! they will pause for you and are curteous, simply amazing! there are no guard rails on the canals, so don't be backing up to take a picture of that quaint building.
A beautiful town with picturesque canals and townhouses, everything you'd imagine a Dutch town to be without the crowds of Amsterdam. So many places to eat, great atmosphere. Good shopping; take a coffee in the market square and watch the world go by.
The Old Town centre is compact and easily accessible from the railway station. Our visit was brief and was specifically to visit the exhibition of paintings by Pieter de Hooch. We also visited the permanent Vermeer exhibition. Both were very well curated with very good audio guides. We also visited the Ouder Kerk and the Neuwe Kerk, both well worth seeing. Our two night stay with just one full day gave little time to fully appreciate the town. We intend to visit again in summer and stay longer.
