Delft is a picturesque Dutch city with canals and historic buildings, situated between Rotterdam and The Hague. Birthplace of the famous Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer, this destination is also home to the iconic Delft blue porcelain and the University of Technology.
Like a phoenix from the ashes, the 17th century Town Hall of Delft was destroyed on 1618 and rebuilt by the architect Hendrick de Keyser. Located across from the City Hall in the centre of the Market square, the Protestant church of Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) with the imposing tower is connected with the Dutch Royal Family.
Resting place for Piet Hein, Maarten Tromp and Johannes Vermeer, the Oude Kerk (Old Church) was built in 1240 and is one of the main landmarks of the city along with the Prinsenhof. Booking.com offers a variety of apartments and hotels in the centre of Delft.
The Delftware factories with the blue ceramics and the hand-painted porcelain are definitely something that travellers should not miss while visiting the Netherlands. Weather permitting, you can enjoy a local beer on a canal terrace.
Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is about 40 minutes away by car or public transport. Delft railway station has train connections to Amsterdam, Utrecht and Leiden.
The old city is very compact so easy to walk everywhere which is definitely the best way to enjoy it. It is also a great base for visiting The Hague and Leiden. There are bikes everywhere - and few cars.
Delft is a beautiful city and it is easy to walk around and see the historic buildings. There are several Delft Blue souvenir shops in the Markt, where you have to pick up some Delft Blue porclain memorabilia. Take a canal boat ride through the canals and hear the stories of the buildings and learn a bit of Delft history. There is the option to buy the combo ticket which includes the canal boat trip and a visit to the Royal Delft Museum, with a tuk-tuk ride back to the Markt. There are many places to eat; I loved Hawaii Poke bowl behind the Townhall on the Markt, and Moeke, which is in the Beestenmarkt (best bitterballen!)
I am Dutch but have lived abroad for years. Delft is always my " go to " town whenever I'am back in the Netherlands. Pretty as a picture. Walk all day, eat at The Bear at the Beesten Markt, climb the Lange Jan, relax at the patios at the market square with coffee or wine, hit the antique market on Saturday.
This is a great town with a vibrant commercial and leisure life as well as a world renowned history: Dutch Golden Age art (Vermeer etc), Delft pottery and the House of Orange - so important for England's Glorious Revolution of 1688.
The cafes and restaurants I tried were all good, I went on a canal tour around the city which was very informative and good fun. The market was well worth a visit. It is very easy to navigate around Delft and there is plenty to see. My trip was in summer and the City is very green with lots of flowers too. Plenty of outdoor seating and not difficult to find shade if necessary.
Delft is magical, old worldly. It is a beautiful little town/city to discover. There are a few things to do but not too many. Just right for a relaxing stay. Visiting the Delft pottery factory is a must. I was able to walk everywhere. Lots of places to eat.
