We found Leiden to be a good alternative : It's full of charm, history, scenic canals, friendly people, good restaurants, interesting shops (especially book stores)--so much more relaxing than Amsterdam, but only a short train ride away if you want to go into the city for a day visit.
Wow- Leiden is beautiful! I loved walking around the city and enjoying its attractions. The canals and houses are beautiful. The market area has great cafes and bars. It’s a terrific little European city that I’d love to go back and visit.
We visited Leiden on a windy day 6-7 years ago and several museums were closed. This time, we had the chance to see Naturalis, the SieboldHuis - Japan Museum, the antiquities Rijksmuseum, the Hortus Botanicus. There are a lot of nice restaurants, beer gardens, ice cream parlours and so on. The city has excellent public transport, and the use of debit cards for paying for the trip has made it even more accessible. We really enjoyed our 4 day stay, we could have stayed longer!
Leiden is a small and very beautiful town. Great for people who want to see another places in Netherland but have problem to rent a car. You can stay in the Leiden and use the train to go another places. All trips about 30 min by train.
This is a charming city. It was clean and everyone we met seemed pleasant and helpful. The Central station was the hub for both bus and rail travel and booking tickets there was easy. We wanted to visit the Kerkenhof Gardens and it was very easy to get there using the combi tickets sold by the Tourist Information office. We found the atmosphere in the city to be relaxed, apart from negotiating the many bicycles coming from all directions but it was nice that there was a lack of vehicular traffic. This is a place to wander, explore and marvel at the engineering ingenuity which lay behind the construction of the many canals and bridges. Oh, and we loved the bells which rang out from the City Hall every quarter of an hour.
Beautiful and charming college town. Clean, quiet, and secure. Great coffee and sweets at Barista Cafe Nice Italian food at Pavarotti Paco Ciao, a must visit for coffee, breakfast, lunch, dinner or drinks! Great atmosphere
The Golden Tulip offers comfortable accommodation in clean and well-arranged rooms. There is all you need including a hairdryer and an iron. The hotel is in a quiet area, easy walking distance from the station and within close proximity to the city centre. The breakfast offers a good combination of continental and cooked foods - all invitingly arranged. The coffee is good. Staff is friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay and will book this hotel again for trips to Leiden.
As always our stay in the Tulip Inn Leiden was perfect. The rooms seem to have been renovated recently. They are clean and comfortable. The paid parking is very convenient--you just park your car when you get there and do everything on foot, since the Tulip Inn is walking distance from the center of Leiden, the university, and the main train station. The staff is friendly, efficient, and helpful! This is our go-to hotel when staying in Leiden and the surrounding area.
This hotel is in a very nice location, walking distance to trains and buses, but very quite. The facilities are new, clean. The bed is comfortable except the pillows are not our type, high and firm. Asked the front desk if we can have a bit softer pillows. The answer is they don't have another types of pillow. Over all, this is a very nice hotel to stay.
Leiden
The studio apartment is on the ground floor with direct access to the street. It is very well equipped and decorated with owners’ personal objects. It’s within walking distance to sites of interest and restaurants. Anna was very helpful and knowledgeable of Leiden culture and history. The breakfast surpassed our expectations, especially the fruit platter.

Fred and his wife were the perfect hosts. The room was lovely. Well appointed, comfortable, and roomy. Breakfast was exceptional and very fresh. Fred was very helpful in suggesting things to do or restaurants to try. Location was very central and convenient to most things one wants to see in Leiden. I would highly recommend!
I had an amazing time staying at this hotel. The double room is extremely spacious, with a generous mini-fridge and coffee machine. Large bathroom with a nice bathtub. The rooms was cleaned every morning, with fresh supplies. The location is just great, close to all the important attractions in Leiden. Highly recommended.
The hotel is a traditional Dutch house, ideally located in the old city centre of Leiden, almost on Pieterskerk square. The train station is 15 minutes walking distance. Rooms are nicely decorated and spacious. There is a self check-in procedure which makes your arrival very easy.
The Hotel staff were extremely helpful. The rooms were very comfortable and had a high end finish. The price was very affordable and it was an ideal location to stroll through the town. I would absolutely stay again and the corporate rate is very competitive
An amazing location for visiting Leiden. Located in the focal point of the historical center of the city, it allows you to enjoy everything Leiden can offer. Also, if you want to travel around, it's only a 15-minutes walk away from the train station.
I really liked the hotel and the staff were very friendly and nice and they upgraded us for free due to low occupancy and it was really close to the nicest bits of Leiden and also the station so all in all it was very good and the beds were nice.
Fabulous old house that has been transformed into a boutique hotel, in the heart of Leiden. Room was huge, and the bed was very comfy. Having a great (free for guests) gym next was awesome too.
Nice room and excellent staff second time stay close to Leiden city centre and to the railway station. Would highly recommend this hotel!
