Of course you'll visit Amsterdam if you're in the Netherlands. But for authentic Dutch charm in a walkable city that isn't overrun by tourists, Utrecht is way, way better, by orders of magnitude. From the city center you can get anywhere you want to go in a comfortable walk, and the streets are filled with interesting canals, churches, museums, cafes, restaurants, shops, and friendly people, almost all of whom speak English. Some of our favorite stops were the Speelklok Museum and the Castle Den Haar, which is about 20 minutes outside town by car.

The city is stunning. The people were helpful to tourists.
The city is stunning. The people were helpful to tourists. The sporting events, European Women's Softball Championships and the King and Queen of the Court Beach Volleyball were going on the same week and it set utrecht at a top location for major sporting events for minor sports. The presentation and production of both of those events exceeded my expectations.

I only had a quick trip to Utrecht this summer (more of a stay-over for one day during a longer trip actually) but I'll always warmly recommend this destination because it is a lovely city with an amazing and charming city center where anyone can have a fantastic time.
I used to live there 15 years ago and I was happy to see that Utrecht still has all its assets. It's a very under-rated destination in the Netherlands that anyone should absolutely try and discover if given the chance.

- I like shopping so the mall near the train station is great for that.
- Train station and mall were renewed recently for the better!
- Public transportation is easy: just swipe your creditcard, no physical ticket needed, no app needed (train and bus)!
- Great variety of places to eat out.
- If you're on a budget: plenty of great ready-to-eat foods in the supermarkets.
- A lot of cultural things/events offered throughout the year.
- Utrecht is literally in the middle of the Netherlands, so a very strategic location if you want to visit and explore other cities.

The city is much more relaxing away from the centre.
The city is much more relaxing away from the centre. It was pleasant walking by the canals and the people are friendly. We caught a bus rwice and these were cheap and good. We also had an excellent boat trip along the canals.
Unfortunately we did not feel very safe as pedestrians in the centre of Utrecht as the much vaunted provision of cycle paths in the city comes at the expense of the safety and well-being of pedestrians. There should be many more traffic lights and pedestrian crossings on cycle paths and more areas reserved for pedestrians only.
We would also have appreciated English translations on information given on historic buildings as this would have added to our appreciation of the city.
Great location in Utrecht, only 5 minutes walking distance from the city centre and about 30 minutes from the train station. We spent most of our time sightseeing so we only went back to the hostel to sleep. The beds were comfy, the main area was set up nicely (serving coffee and tea) and the staff were all so nice and helpful! Perfect spot to spend a few nights in Utrecht!
clean, modern and comfortable room

Situated close to the city center of Utrecht, this well let's say retro-style hotel surprised us with its welcoming host and great service (simple breakfast included!) for a small price. We enjoyed our stay!
