Loved having all the historic part in one area. Going up to the lookout was a great way to see the wharf and how it all was connected to the history of the town. The ladies at the information centre were wonderful and we fully recommend the video about the town there. We recommend lunch at the Star and Garter. The seafood chowder IS the best. We stayed at Miss Barclays cottage and were thrilled at the attention to detail of this Victorian cottage and the thoughtfulness of the hosts.
I love this quirky little town. It was my second visit in 5 years. Good restaurants/cafes. We had dinner at the Old Post Office...very good food and a fun, local atmosphere. Had breakfast at the little German cafe on Arun St. with great coffee and fabulous baked goods and you can get a cooked breakfast as well. Funky, fun shoppes. A great vibe. And if you’re lucky, you might see a little blue penguin walking the streets at night!
Oamaru is a really great place in North Otago. When we were there it was buzzing, with a Jazz weekend, Gypsy Fair and lots of attractions. And so much wonderful ornate classical architecture. Good to see that it is being well preserved.
This little town has quite a lot to offer, it has a lovely old renovated warehouses with interesting shops cafes and restaurants. There is also the opportunity to see penguins in the wild by the boat jetty in the Harbour, this is sign posted.
We enjoyed a visit to the breakwater in the morning and saw a few New Zealand sea lions lounging among the rocks at the blue penguin sanctuary. We missed viewing the penguins coming ashore the previous evening. This would be part of our itinerary on a futur visit. The steampunk themed art and sculptures in the neighbourhood was pretty cool.
Went to see penguins and we did! Glad we paid for front row seats; totally worth it to have tiny penguins walk 10 inches in front of your toes. :-D. We did not explore the town much but enjoyed its beautiful location right on the ocean.

The Manor Estate is truly beautiful. It is an events venue , full of character and with the most amazing grounds. Our room was sunny and furnished in a very individual and quaint style, it felt homely. Liz, the owner, had supplied milk, tea etc and biscuits. She made us a continental breakfast the following day and was so friendly and chatty. She felt like an old friend by the time we left! Oamaru is a quirky little town and well worth a visit.

Clean and comfortable room with the ability to use Rosie’s kitchen and washing machine. Kitchen was well stocked with dishes and cooking utensils. Rosie was friendly and helpful with things to do in the area. Location not far from the historic district of Oamaru. Note that the bathroom is shared with guests in the other bedroom and with the owner.

The feeling of stepping back in time was so much a part of Oamaru I am glad we stayed somewhere that was in tune with the personality of the town. We enjoyed our hosts handwritten notes and instructions and although we didn't light it the convection stove bought back childhood memories. Certainly a very unique place to stay!

It's a lovely little cottage in a great location. Very nicely appointed. It had a nice little kitchenette with a little bottle of wine and candy in the fridge. The owner is very friendly and responds quickly to emails. It's a quick walk to food, drink, the Harbor, and the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony!
