Acclaimed for its thriving art, film and cultural scene, windy ‘Welly’ is enclosed by mountains such as Kaukau and Victoria on one side and the picturesque Wellington Harbour on the other. Wellington has the distinction of being the world’s southernmost capital city.
As the gateway to New Zealand’s magical south island, Queens Wharf is headquarters for ferry services across Cook Strait as well as in the direction of Eastbourne on the other side of the harbour.
Get your bearings by using the Kelburn cable car that starts at Lambton Quay and travels up to the Botanic Gardens and Carter Observatory with its sweeping views across the Miramar Peninsula and local bays.
Don’t miss a visit to New Zealand’s national museum, Te Papa, which also incorporates the National Art Gallery. Cuba Street offers a multicultural touch and includes the Wellington Night Market with an array of international cuisines. Ascot Street is a lively shopping precinct.
Wellington Airport has flights to other domestic destinations as well as Australia and Fiji. Booking.com can help you choose your hotel to round off a fantastic city trip vacation.
Enjoyed wandering around the Sunday morning markets near waterfront -abundance of fruit and veges and other goodies on offer. First visit to Te Papa - Gallipoli exhibition very compelling. Need to go again to see everything on display. Went through the old museum on waterfront re Wellington history which was interesting. Cable car trip was great, with brilliant views over harbour and plenty of walks in hills on offer. Walk to Oriental Bay, the War Memorial and ferry across to Days Bay/Eastbourne an adventure. Loved our dinner at CinCin (as always), happened upon a 2 for 1 Monday dinner deal at a lively Irish pub and enjoyed lunch at Fidel's. Walked mostly for central city, bus service looked well-patronised.
Ease of getting around, close to the city and waterfront. Organisation of travell excellent. Numerous taxis available and helpfull. Bars and cafes amazing .Entertainment aplenty. Loved The Cambridge Hotel atmosphere and hospitality.
Soak yourself in the CBD concrete jungle maze and have a cuppa or enjoy authentic local cuisine in its expressive vibes and relaxing atmosphere. Stroll at the waterfront walkways all the way to oriental bay, you will find this artistic city are full of its literature. beauty, culture and surprises at every corner. Lastly, make sure you make peace with the wind Welly has to offer and go visit the Wind Turbine to fall in love with this elegant and culture rich Wind City of NZ.
I really liked Wellington. Its the perfect size city to go and explore, and the people are very friendly and relaxed. Food was awesome, being the steak i had was exactly how the Kiwis boast about, and that their beef was some of the best i have had, along with a bloody brilliant Hawkes Bay Red. Thats the best thing about visiting a city like Wellington, is experiencing the best local food and wine. If you do go to Wellington, you need to visit the Cable cars that take you up to the suburb of Kelburn and a absolutely uninterrupted view of Wellington. You can also visit the Carter Observatory there as well, and the Botanical Gardens.
Te Papa was a must the Gallipoli exhibition was incredible. As was the Barbie exhibition at the Wellington Musuem. Getting around Wellington is easy once you navigate the public transport which is fairly easy with their maps and bus drivers were all helpful. We ate at Aroy Thai Eatery (no cash here though)and The Dumpling Company both of these were delicious. We took a train ride out to Johnsonville just to get out, wander around their mall, have an ice cream and train back, totally worth it. The biggest disappointment was the Zoo. Maybe it was timing or weather but a lot of the animals were not visible. Did get an up close look at the gorgeous Giraffe and far away view of the amazing Snow Leopard.
I love Wellington. It has all the amenities of a city, but it doesn't feel like a city because it's so walkable, and has an open feeling probably due to the sea meeting the city. The botanic gardens are lovely, and taking the cable car there is a fun experience (although its a surprisingly short journey). Te Papa always has something interesting on offer. Nightlife is vibrant at weekends, a bit quiet during the week. Lots of nice eateries.
The bed was very comfortable. Nice use of glass in the shower made an otherwise small room feel fairly spacious (but be aware that between that and the sliding glass, non-airtight bathroom door, you want to be sharing the room with a *very* good friend). Staff were great. Wasn't allowed to use the gym or restaurant because of my vax status, but that's not the hotel's fault. Aircon/heatpump, which isn't a given at this price point in Wellington.
Overall the Shepards Arms Hotel was excellent. Location was excellent, centrally located, easy access to the motorway, public transport and all the other Wellington hotspots. Staff are super friendly and really accommodating. The food on offer is yummy too. For an establishment close to the CBD another bonus is that there is free parking onsite but it does pay to arrive early or you may miss out. Highly recommend to other travellers, this is very good value for money.
Two very comfy double beds in the decent sized room. Pillow menu available ! Decent sized shower with plenty of hot water and a nice high pressure. Room was warm Could hear some traffic noise but have had worse at other hotels in Wellington. Central city location was brilliant. Thunderbird Cafe directly across the road from the hotel entrance do great brunches & coffee.
Wellington
I’m an ex Wellington resident so I know the town and this place is an excellent central location, a short stroll/walk to everywhere. It was a standard quest apartment which is to say it’s a well appointed and serviced modernish apartment. It’s in the back of the old bank building which is a central landmark in Wellington. Pretty much the heart of the city.
This property is in Central Wellington and very handy to city cafes and restaurants. It is only a 5-8 minute walk to Te Papa and the waterfront. The apartment we had was quite small but adequate for a few days stay. The location was fantastic. It was quiet and warm. We would stay again. It was very good value for the price we paid.
I liked the fact that we were able to book the hotel very last minute and had very accommodating staff who assisted us. I liked the location which was right next to a supermarket and city location. The room had all the necessities. I liked that there was 24 hour reception also.
Wellington
We liked that the room was fully self-contained and clean, with nothing chipped, worn or threadbare. The central location offered a great starting point to explore Wellington City. Check-in and check-out was seamless and late check-out was greatly appreciated.
Great location for central wellington businesses. I also think that the City Life beds are one of the most comfortable in the hotels I have stayed at. Room was a great size. Friendly and helpful staff who were happy to sort a few things for me.
This was our first time staying at the Sofitel Wellington and we will definitely be back. Though the Hotel isn't the closet to the city centre, everything else made up for this. The staff, room, food and facilities were all excellent.
Very, very convenient if you have a morning flight to catch after a day in Wellington or a late flight into the city. Beds always comfortable and usually very clean. A great variety of places for breakfast in the airport or at the hotel.
Beautiful building. Room was exceptional. Spacious, clean, comfortable and very well appointed. Dined in their restaurant and the meal was amazing. Great location right in the city could walk everywhere easily.
Modern brand new, beautiful and super comfortable rooms. Amazing value for money compared to other hotels in the city. Helpful staff. Good location.
Love the breakfast, great value and lots of options. Handy to Central wellington, if you need to travel further afield Ubers are cheap and plentiful
We loved the location of the hotel - very close to public transport and very central in the city!
Great location with only a short walk to central city & short walk to Oriental bay .
Good value of money for this kind of hotel especially in the heart of Wellington city.
Location was great for Wellington City. The bar entrance is also really cool.
