Welligton is a very Compact and Walkable City. Remember it's a Harbour City too, so has some awesome views. The City has a very Alternative Cultural Vibe about it. You can wear anything here and still fit in........Funky Shoes, Coloured Hair to Tattoos. If you don't like too much walking, the Bus Transportation System is also a great way to get around. Get yourself a Snapper Card & leave the lose change for the Buskers. Don't forget about the Trains & Cook Strait Ferry, they are there to get you further & worth the adventure. Cuba Street, Courtney Place and the Waterfront are always favourites, plus Mt Victoria. Eating on the go all the time........Bakery & Sushi Food outlets are a great way to grab a bite. Remember most Sushi outlets will drop their prices late in the afternoon to clear their shelves. Food Courts in Courtney Place & Willis Street have just as good cuisine & variety. If you don't like walking up hills, take a bus ride or even better still, take a ride in the Cable Car and explore the Botanic Gardens. Then just meander on down the back streets and ally-ways back into the City Centre again. Fantastic Views on a good day or any day. Wellington can also have Windy Days as well, which puts the City in a whole new & exciting perspective. It just wants to lift you up and make you fly with the Seagulls, so just get out there and enjoy . No wonder they call Wellington "Wild at Heart"
We were in Wellington for a soccer camp for our son, we spent some time in Island Bay, which felt like a resort town with lots of little boutiques. It was unusually sunny while we were there and typically windy! My partner and I took our oldest around Wellington during the week with no particular plans, just walking where we pleased. We visited Te Papa, and went to the Gallipoli exhibit, which was impressive. We also used Te Papa as our central, parking, meet up place. While walking around we stumbled across the National War Museum- this was every bit as good as the Te Papa Gallipoli exhibit (if not better) because we were taken through by a guide who gave lots of information about the Great War. We strolled the botanical gardens. Rode the cable car. Went shopping in town and it was very easy to catch the bus back to our hotel from town. The food was also fantastic. We visited a Wonton restuarant with homemade fresh wontons, lovely! We could have used more time to explore more of the walks and attended the theatre but it didn't happen this trip- we will be visiting again soon.
Absolute must is a leisurely stroll along the waterfront with a stop off for at the very least, a drink. Great cafes and restaurants to choose from. Loved eating outside at the Karaka, beside the lagoon on the waterfront. Great food choice and fairly priced. Next favourite was a stop off for a drink at the Bangalore Polo Club, love the décor, lighting and the food. And then a meal at my all time favourite, the Osterio Del Toro! Awesome atmosphere, and great menu choices. We visited the Dominion War Memorial and were very impressed and moved by the Peter Jackson War Tribute. Next onto the Weta Workshop and a stop off for a coffee at The Roxy Theatre, where they currently have a life size storm trooper on display (great for those Star War fans). Soo much more to dooo, but ran short on time.
We enjoyed Wellington for the variety of things to do and its surviving Victorian architecture. The Old Government House was interesting for its colonial memories, while a visit to the newer parliament builidngs is a must. A visit to the Cuba street area is also good for the range of entertainment venues, shops and restaurants. A trip to Kelburn on the Wellington Cable Car provides wonderful views of the harbour and it's also the location of Wellington Botanical Gardens. Wellington is surrounded by hills, so to walk a short way fom he main streets requires a little climbing effort. Because of its location in the Roaring Forties and its exposure to the winds blowing through Cook Strait, Wellington is often called the world's windiest city.
Travelling with a 5 year old so everything revolves around activities for young ones ! Te Papa, early morning food market, Frank Kitts Park, Space Place! Cable Car, Botanical Gardens, Wellington Zoo, Kilbirnie Aquatic Centre, Lyall Bay beach, Oriental parade, Crocodile bike rides, Spruce Goose cafe, Chow eatery and Eis Gelato plus shopping .. So many things to do and was enough to keep an adult interested & extremely tired by the end of each day. Public transport was great otherwise most things are within walking distance if staying in central city ie Lambton Quay.
The Wellington Zoo is a must see! We stayed for the whole day to catch all the talks and got to see lots of the animals up close :) We had dinner at a restaurant called Little Penang which had really delicious Malaysian food at an affordable price. The buses made it really easy to get around the city but walking is very possible too and will in fact give you more opportunity to check out the shops and stores all around. Te papa Museum is another place that should really be checked out. The exhibitions are very well done! We were lucky to be able to check out the Dreamworks Exhibition which was really fun and insightful, especially if you love the work that comes from that studio.
Would recommend larger King Studio (with kitchen) to families. Extremely good value for money. Very central location - exit onto main shopping street and two blocks to waterfront. Rooms were bright and airy. The hotel is only a couple of years old. The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful throughout. It’s not a traditional hotel as it’s very tightly staffed (2 people at reception plus cleaning crew and that seems about it) - the saving however goes into lower nightly rate. The excellent cooked breakfast is provided by an external restaurant on ground floor - no naff buffet - really looked forward into it. No frills hotel thats amazing - I’ve not seen this business model work so well before.
Trinity Hotel exceeded my expectations. The staff were really friendly and helpful. The hotel is a bit dated but is clean and has all the amenities that is required. Loved the electric blankets and wall heater to keep warm. Iron and ironing board was available, didn’t use it but was an extra that is usually not provided. Tea/coffee, towels & toiletries were plentiful and refreshed daily. There is a restaurant and rooftop bar that seems to be really popular with the locals. A New World supermarket is 5 mins walk and 10 mins walk takes you to Lambton Quay and the waterfront. They kept our luggage after checkout as we had a late night flight - this was much appreciated.
Everything was amazing, comfy beds and pillows, great views, nice shower, bit ridiculous how there's a huge glass panel along the entire bottom of the bathroom wall /door, makes us short people feel a bit exposed! Lucky I was only with my husband and kids. Otherwise amazing clean comfortable room with excellent food and staff. Also the parking was fine for our Toyota hilux double cab ute! It's tight but only an issue if you really don't know how drive I guess....... 🤔
Super big room with kitchenette. They have swimming pool and hot tub even a sundeck in the heart of Wellington ! With the best price! After a month around South island and cabina in motor parks we really enjoyed our stay in our spacious bedroom with 2 comfortable queen beds. The staff is really nice too. To add at the location they are closed to the Emrik a wonderful burger good truck.
Very friendly staff. Parking on site is extra, but the street parking may be difficult and your car has to be moved by 8am, so it’s worth it. Breakfast is included and is excellent. Eggs, breads, cereals, potatoes and fruits. Check in and check out is very quick and easy. A market is down the block so easy to run in and pick up any food items ready to go. Short walk to center.
Wellington
I had to make a quick reservation and this place was great. The front desk were very kind, and let me have a room with two beds for the price of one since I was alone. The room was very nice, clean, and each bed is separated. All in all I would definitely recommend this place if you need a quick, nice, and clean room to stay.
Wellington
The staff member that signed me in was amazing he even walked me right to the room and explained stuff to me that I needed to know. Usually you get get the key and you have to figure it out for yourself lol so yeah Very nice man 👍
Wellington
We had an early flight and needed somewhere close to the airport. They gave us a card to call the shuttle and we even got a discount. It’s in a good location for that and there are a couple of cafes located near by.
Wellington
The room was clean, the front desk person was very helpful, and the location was three blocks from more bar/pub/restaurants than you could shake a stick at.
Kyle, Lara and Joe were extremely kind and helpful. There was one other lady at reception but unfortunately I cannot remember her name she was equally helpful.
Very good hotel in a very convenient location. Our room was huge and extremely comfortable. Having dinner at the Artisan was an added bonus!
Wellington
Everything was perfect and the personal very very nice and helpful .Thank you so much :) Highly recommended, very central and good parking
