Acclaimed for its thriving art, film and cultural scene, windy ‘Welly’ is enclosed by mountains such as Kaukau and Victoria on one side and the picturesque Wellington Harbour on the other. Wellington has the distinction of being the world’s southernmost capital city.
As the gateway to New Zealand’s magical south island, Queens Wharf is headquarters for ferry services across Cook Strait as well as in the direction of Eastbourne on the other side of the harbour.
Get your bearings by using the Kelburn cable car that starts at Lambton Quay and travels up to the Botanic Gardens and Carter Observatory with its sweeping views across the Miramar Peninsula and local bays.

Soak yourself in the CBD concrete jungle maze and have a cuppa or enjoy authentic local cuisine in its expressive vibes and relaxing atmosphere. Stroll at the waterfront walkways all the way to oriental bay, you will find this artistic city are full of its literature. beauty, culture and surprises at every corner. Lastly, make sure you make peace with the wind Welly has to offer and go visit the Wind Turbine to fall in love with this elegant and culture rich Wind City of NZ.
I really liked Wellington. Its the perfect size city to go and explore, and the people are very friendly and relaxed. Food was awesome, being the steak i had was exactly how the Kiwis boast about, and that their beef was some of the best i have had, along with a bloody brilliant Hawkes Bay Red. Thats the best thing about visiting a city like Wellington, is experiencing the best local food and wine. If you do go to Wellington, you need to visit the Cable cars that take you up to the suburb of Kelburn and a absolutely uninterrupted view of Wellington. You can also visit the Carter Observatory there as well, and the Botanical Gardens.
Te Papa was a must the Gallipoli exhibition was incredible. As was the Barbie exhibition at the Wellington Musuem. Getting around Wellington is easy once you navigate the public transport which is fairly easy with their maps and bus drivers were all helpful. We ate at Aroy Thai Eatery (no cash here though)and The Dumpling Company both of these were delicious. We took a train ride out to Johnsonville just to get out, wander around their mall, have an ice cream and train back, totally worth it. The biggest disappointment was the Zoo. Maybe it was timing or weather but a lot of the animals were not visible. Did get an up close look at the gorgeous Giraffe and far away view of the amazing Snow Leopard.
I love Wellington. It has all the amenities of a city, but it doesn't feel like a city because it's so walkable, and has an open feeling probably due to the sea meeting the city. The botanic gardens are lovely, and taking the cable car there is a fun experience (although its a surprisingly short journey). Te Papa always has something interesting on offer. Nightlife is vibrant at weekends, a bit quiet during the week. Lots of nice eateries.
Wellington is a great place with variety - a little something for everyone. You can travel the world from one restaurant and bar to another without even going too far off the main streets. Lots to see and do - Easy to get on to public transport and to and from Airport. An eclectic mix of shops, cafes, galleries, eateries, restaurants and bars close to the waterfront. The waterfront alone can be as busy or as quiet as you want it to be. A great Way-cation spot ... no matter what the season.
Wellington is a great place to visit. If you are taking a break and just want some time to yourself then chill out in Wellington. I go running around Oriental Bay with others when I stay longer its great. Visit some of the local attractions Te Papa, and eat out at an eatery down on the wharf. Public transport available train or bus, taxis if you must.
Wellington
Wonderful accommodation with everything you need. Great size room with a large ensuite. Very hospitable couple who were so friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Accommodation is close to airport and city. Cleanliness+++++++ Lovely breakfast with a view. Cereal, yogurt, fruit salad. Toast and eggs with a hash brown. Cooked for you with a friendly smile at time requested. Beautiful little touches like the heater was turned on in your room when we got back in the evening.
Large warm quiet modern room with everything you need including a sitting area with a large window to watch the planes come and go. Extra large and exceptionally comfortable bed with many pillows to choose from. Rain showers I always love. 11 am check out is a bonus. Two restaurants on site plus eateries in the airport. Five minutes between checking out of our room and checking into our flight to fly home. Thank you to all of the staff at Rydges Wellington airport Hotel.
Location was brilliant. We were going to Kinky boots at St James and its right next door. Airport bus almost stops right outside door to as do buses for zoo. Irish pub Jack Hackett is on opposite corner and has great food and entertainment. Easy walking distance to everything in Wellington city. Reception staff are very friendly and helpful. Comfy bed, good shower pressure. Small window but nice enough view over to bay.
This was a great hotel for a short business trip to the city. I was able to walk everywhere. It was clean, and I especially liked the kitchenette in the room; that was a pleasant surprised. I also liked how all toiletries, including laundry detergent, was provided by the hotel. Check in and check out was a breeze. I also appreciated the turn-down service with nightly teas. Oh, and it was quiet; no noise.
Wellington
I’m an ex Wellington resident so I know the town and this place is an excellent central location, a short stroll/walk to everywhere. It was a standard quest apartment which is to say it’s a well appointed and serviced modernish apartment. It’s in the back of the old bank building which is a central landmark in Wellington. Pretty much the heart of the city.
We had an amazing view over the Wellington Harbour, and the location of the hotel was fantastic for walking to the city centre, Te Papa, etc. The rooms were clean, and spacious. The children enjoyed the buffet breakfast, and the staff were friendly & helpful, but it would have been great if they had changed the rooms to accomodate our request.
Wellington
The layout of the apartment was great and spacious, and well presented. Great view from the balcony, location was perfect, close to the waterfront and the city centre. Wifi was great, TV and Netflix was awesome to relax with… which is not normal for a hotel. Everything about it was perfect
Excellent location, with a great view of Wellington city proper and at a pretty decent price point. The bedroom was well outfitted, good sheets and pillows, and there wasn't any noticeable noise interference for the night I stayed.
Location was good right in the debate of the city, king sized bed was very comfy and very much enjoyed the art deco vibe to the hotel. Staff were wonderful and very professional made us feel very welcomed.
City location, basically at the heart of the city. Close walks to shops, groceries, food, restaurants and city attractions. One of the most convenient located hotels. Hotel was also clean and tidy.
Wellington
Location was amazing. It was across New World which is a supermarket and very accessible to everything since it was within the city and around 20min bus ride from the Airport.
Wellington
Very central walk the city car park for car got rid of the rental car a free bus to airport for oldies yes I will pick this as first choice to stay in Wellington
We loved the location - central city and close to the waterfront walkway, dining, and Te Papa. I would choose this hotel for another visit to Wellington.
Wellington
