Acclaimed for its thriving art, film and cultural scene, windy ‘Welly’ is enclosed by mountains such as Kaukau and Victoria on one side and the picturesque Wellington Harbour on the other. Wellington has the distinction of being the world’s southernmost capital city.
As the gateway to New Zealand’s magical south island, Queens Wharf is headquarters for ferry services across Cook Strait as well as in the direction of Eastbourne on the other side of the harbour.
Get your bearings by using the Kelburn cable car that starts at Lambton Quay and travels up to the Botanic Gardens and Carter Observatory with its sweeping views across the Miramar Peninsula and local bays.

Very good bus service. Lots of places to eat. Great shopping. Waterfront is beautiful. Excellent for a short break away. Cuba Street great on a Friday night. Take the bus to Queensgate Mall....especially if the weather isnt good.
We struck the most godforsaken weather ever in Wellington in our experience. The bus drivers were grumpy and unhelpful! (Pressure of sticking to a timetable) There seemed to be a lot of grumpy Uber and taxi drivers! I blame it on the weather! The trains were the best. It certainly put us off wandering round exploring the city. We caught the train to Porirua so we could shop in the mall and be warm and dry! And Pataka Art gallery is so worth visiting in Porirua. Usually love Wellington but this time was an exception!
Unfortunately we arrived when the weather was at its worst, however if you don’t mind rain and wind make your way the the museum as it is a must see. You will need a full day just for this attraction. It doesn’t matter where you eat as all the food from pubs to restaurants and even your local cafe is to die for.
Enjoyed wandering around the Sunday morning markets near waterfront -abundance of fruit and veges and other goodies on offer. First visit to Te Papa - Gallipoli exhibition very compelling. Need to go again to see everything on display. Went through the old museum on waterfront re Wellington history which was interesting. Cable car trip was great, with brilliant views over harbour and plenty of walks in hills on offer. Walk to Oriental Bay, the War Memorial and ferry across to Days Bay/Eastbourne an adventure. Loved our dinner at CinCin (as always), happened upon a 2 for 1 Monday dinner deal at a lively Irish pub and enjoyed lunch at Fidel's. Walked mostly for central city, bus service looked well-patronised.
Ease of getting around, close to the city and waterfront. Organisation of travell excellent. Numerous taxis available and helpfull. Bars and cafes amazing .Entertainment aplenty. Loved The Cambridge Hotel atmosphere and hospitality.
Soak yourself in the CBD concrete jungle maze and have a cuppa or enjoy authentic local cuisine in its expressive vibes and relaxing atmosphere. Stroll at the waterfront walkways all the way to oriental bay, you will find this artistic city are full of its literature. beauty, culture and surprises at every corner. Lastly, make sure you make peace with the wind Welly has to offer and go visit the Wind Turbine to fall in love with this elegant and culture rich Wind City of NZ.
Excellent facilities. All machines including dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, tumble dryer looked brand new and squeaky clean. The bed is super wide and comfortable. Tasty tea and cookies within the room. Staff were very helpful with text message and direct phone call available. Parking map and detailed parking instructions were provided. Central location in Wellington CBD, has supermarket and pharmacy downstairs. The cable car is also right next to the hotel.
The free airport shuttle for pickup was excellent. Great location for our weekend as close to our friend's house. Cheap Uber rides to the city if required. Kilbirnie shops just around the corner. The hotel kindly put our friends across the hall from us at the end of the hallway, so we were able to have our doors open to come and go. The fact it was also a hot weekend, so having the pool was excellent.
Well appointed room, with the added advantage of comfortable couch. Spotlessly clean so heads up to hotel staff. COVID precautions were comprehensive without being obstructive. Everything we expected from a hotel of this brand. Is the first time we have stayed at this hotel when in Wellington but have decided next time would definitely stay here again. Location is amazing.
Great inner city location - new build with very clean and tidy exterior and interior. Welcome at the front desk was very friendly and helpful and access to our room was fast and easy. Room was small but well appointed. Not much storage space but we were travelling light anyway. Shower was excellent - always a hallmark of a good accomodation choice.
We were in Wellington to mountain bike and required safe storage for our bikes, the staff allowed us to take our bikes up to the room providing they were clean. This was amazing. It would be great if the hotel had a lock up storage cage or room available for storage of bikes as the popularity of biking in the city grows.
My preferred place to stay in Wellington CBD. Great central location. The city noises are non-existent. Many hotels in the CBD you will hear people and rubbish collection, not here. Excellent price, especially when you compare their 1 bedroom apt against most studio rooms. Staff are super helpful and polite.
Wellington
Previous hotel booking that we booked 3 months in advance cancelled on us, this was a last minute booking, they were able to accomodae us an were absolutely amazing 😁😁😉😊 definitely would go back again 😉😊🥰😍🤩 staff, everyone were just helpfull so great to see in our Capital city ❤❤❤💯💯💯
Location was perfect since it was located close to all the restaurants near or on Cuba street. It's also close to the boardwalk and various museums. Was able to hike to Mount Victoria from here too. Very central to everything I wanted to see or do in the city.
Wellington
The hotel has a pleasant reading and relaxing area and this area is adjacent to the bar which closes at 9pm. There is free street parking after hours and the hotel is within walking distance to the core of the city and restaurants etc. It is an old-charm venue.
Location is really central for wellington central city. Handy to trains for travelling out. The breakfast was nice. Staff very helpful and everyone earing and wondering in and out seemed relaxed and enjoying themselces. Nice feel.it
Wellington
I had my own food which I brought with me. As for the location of this Hotel very handy to the Wellington train station, also walking distance to the local shops in the city and water front.
CityLife was very, very clean-unlike Rydges Wellington I recently stayed at, they were filthy and did not care at all. The room was quiet, bed comfortable, what more could you want.
A lovely art filled hotel in the CBD, easy walking distance to central city. Good cafes and a big supermarket near by. A generally luxurious feel. Bed very soft and comfortable.
Lovely stay in Wellington. Great location. Quiet. We really liked chocolate hour as well 😋😍 Wellington is a great city and this hotel didn't disappoint!
Great location in Wellington city near restaurants and Courtenay place and close to tab arena. Very clean and the staff were very helpful.
