Located on the main street of Wanganui, Rutland Arms Inn and features an a la carte restaurant and bar. Free Wi-Fi access is available in all areas, and there is free on-site parking. The staff at Rutland Arms could not have been more hospitable and accommodating. We arrived MUCH later than our expected arrival time, and we were starving to boot. The kitchen had closed but the staff was kind enough to make an exception and prepare us a sandwich and some nachos -- after being on the road for about 10 hours that day, a hot meal was like a religious experience. Special thanks to Emma for making it all happen. Breakfast the next morning was probably the best we had during our one week stay - we had the continental and were very satisfied (and also new converts to muesli). Accommodations were clean, cozy, and we would stay again in a heartbeat.
The Grand Hotel is located in the center of Wanganui, opposite Cooks Gardens Sporting Complex. It offers free parking. All of the comfortable rooms include modern facilities. Having stayed in this hotel before, it was like coming home - and in a good central location in Whanganui. The staff, as always, were friendly and helpful.
Kingsgate The Avenue is located on the main road into Wanganui, only a 10-minute walk from the CBD. The spacious studios are decorated in a neutral style and feature satellite TV and private... Great stay - from Reception staff to actual stay. No problems at all
Quality Inn Collegiate offers affordable and air-conditioned accommodations with free Wi-Fi and cable TV. Always nice to stay, car parking secure, restaurant attached is amazing... always great food, and the restaurant staff are fantastic! facilities are good, bed is comfortable, bathroom is always spotless. Their hotwater kettle is to die for, do not hear a sound until the water boils.. am actually gonna track this down! it is a Singer!!! top marks right there.

Just 0.9 mi from the town center, Gateway Motor Lodge - Wanganui offers free Wi-Fi access and free parking access, including parking for boats, horse floats and trucks. Very Clean and well kept, great value, and the best shower pressure of anywhere in NZ

Located in Brunswick, Tokomaru Lodges is set among 3000 acres on Tokomaru Deer Breeding Farm. Guests can enjoy views over the Whanganui River and Mount Ruapehu.
Bushy Park Historical Homestead is located in Kai Iwi. Free WiFi is provided. The bed and breakfast has a terrace. Guests can also relax in the garden. What a wonderful experience to be able to stay on this historical homestead. We loved walking on the trails and listening to the native birds and imagining how it was in the past . The dinners here were excellent and we loved sitting around and learning about New Zealand through the experiences of Dale & Graeme.
Located in Marton, Pukepapa Lodge has free WiFi, and guests can enjoy barbecue facilities and a garden. There's a seating and/or dining area in some units. Pam gave us a warm welcome to her beautiful Edwardian home - very comfortable and lovely home cooked breakfast. A really delightful hidden gem.

Couldn't do jet boat, canoeing or Bridge to Nowhere due to my personal physicality, so went on Whanganui River Road Mail Run. To be recommended. Valerie was extremely pleasant, knowledgeable and the trip was just great.
We went on the steam river cruise, it was not he best day and was after a storm but at least it was not raining, take a coat in case it is cold, don’t sit at the back of the boat you will get covered in black ash, but was a great expierence, The size of the town surprised us with lots of traffic lights, was very easy to find everything and a lovely town
We like climbing up the twin towers on the hill and the view of the river. The experience of taking the old elevator is quite special! The glass displays in the art gallery are amazing and the glass workshop worth viewing as well.
Loads of art related things to do and see in Whanganui. The shopping is adequate, the best things are the specialty shops.... with a book shop to die for, and loads of other unique shops, you do have to hunt for.
Beautiful town with lots of fun things to do and nice places to visit, Virginia Lake and Durie hill are the must goes. The typical wild west coast with black sand beach is amazing, but need consider the wild wind.
I was there for the Masters Games (indoor bowls) and these were fun though there were indications it seemed to have been run on a tight budget. I was fortunate to arrive just in time for an organ concert at Christ Church, at this stage there are no more planned but if they come up I highly recommend them (price was $25 for those who are not signed up as Friends of the Organ so may be the same for future concerts.) I didn't do a lot of the tourist type things (some of them I had done on a previous visit) but I still enjoyed exploring. I did enjoy taking a look around Queens Park. Definitely would like to come back to Wanganui with a bit more time to spare, Local bus service is a bit confusing and is limited at weekends and doesn't run at all on Sunday. Most central areas are easily reached on foot so not too much of a problem for those areas unless you are loaded up with luggage or it's raining!

Small family run motel, very clean, cosy, and comfortable. Friendly helpful owners, great location on outskirts of CBD but near supermarkets, garages, take-aways, bars etc. Whanganui is a nice little town (but avoid the port/industrial bit to the south) with a good range of shops and facilities. The motel is on main road into CBD but the traffic falls away in the evening and it is a quiet location (we were in room nearest road) and a good night’s sleep is easy.

The cottage was immaculate, super clean and cosy. It was lovely to stay at the farm, with a pheasant and the cows. There was a lot of attention to detail in everything from the house itself to the breakfast. Philippa is an amazing host, super friendly and welcoming. Location is perfect just outside of Whanganui. Would definitely come back here.

Formerly a prestigious Wanganui home Hikurangi was left by the family to the Anglican church in Whanganui. It was subsequently sold and today it is a 'Stay Place' for long term short term motel and back packer accommodation. We took a Deluxe Queen room with Ensuite and breakfast.
