Alcobaça
In the historic village of Aljubarrota, this charming guest house offers a quiet and welcoming atmosphere. It features an outdoor pool and free Wi-Fi. The Monastery of Alcobaça is 3.1 mi away. This is a beautiful property, family operated. The rooms are large, with plenty of room for luggage and clothing. The beds were extremely comfortable. Even though we were the only guests on the two nights we were there, they laid out a wonderful and extensive Portuguese breakfast, with nice extras like a selection of fine cheeses. (No hot food, but we rarely saw that in Portugal.) We used this property as a base to visit Nazare, Alcobaca, and Batahla. We drove into Alcobaca in less than 10 minutes for excellent dinners!

Host, Lourdes was very caring, friendly and nice. She gave us recommendations for dinner, and what to see in the area. A "dusty" but not dirty city. As with almost anywhere in Portugal, the people were polite and helpful; even the Police! Elderly and/or disabled visitors should know that it is not easy to park a car near to the Mosteiro. However, it is a great centre to stay if you want to take-in other places to visit which are within easy driving distances e.g. Nazare, Obidos, Batalha, Fatima and Tomar.
A very nice city to visit. Very near the Atlantic beaches by car or by buses. A charming monastery in the town center with esplanades to enjoy the view. The city is cozy and everything is at a walking distance. We can find patisseries, restaurants and bars easy.
The monastery is really wonderful, although it needs some renovation works. There were no brochures in Portuguese. The restaurant Antonio Padeiro offers good traditional food. The starters they put at the beginning are paid. They are good, but if you don't want them, ask to remove from the table. The dishes are good even to share if you are not very hungry (if you had to many starters). The rest of the town has some beautiful streets and squares as well. The pastry house "Alcoa" has wonderful sweets and the terrace overlooks the Monastery.
We stayed in alcobaca for 4 nights. In love with this place. Beautiful monasterie, lovely restaurants and nice region with other beautiful places and monasteries/churches. Also not far from a lovely beach. People are so nice. Not taken over by tourists yet, so very authentic!
Eating out was inexpensive, even that cafes around the monastery were reasonable. Hilly town, some roads very steep. Streets paved with small diamond shaped cobblestone, which were quite sllippy when wearing flat soled shoes. Well worth a visit, castle ruins on hilltop. Lots of ceramics to see and buy, artwork in glass vases in streets. Vibrant town. Lovely scenery outside the town. Interesting villages, not too far from the sea
The Saurday food market at the Mercado Municipal is fabulous! I was there on business (Ceramic Exhibition) and the market is a real draw. The city, obviously the Monastry, has ancient structures and features. It is interesting and beautiful to walk around. Lovely vegan food was provided by Frei Bernardo Restaurant at our request.
Alcobaça
The hotel is as good as all the reviews say, and highly recommended. What was an additional surprise is how pleasant the town of Alcobaca is. Despite the monastery, the town does not get rave reviews from guide books (Rough Guide), but in fact it is a really nice town to stay in, with good restaurants and well located for other attractions.
