We were there for Holy Week so it was a treat for us to get such a look at local family life at the celebrations and processions. Families looked so loving and connected. Lots of children everywhere.
We visited Braga because our son is doing research at the University of Minho in Braga. Visiting with him for several days was fantastic and he showed us all of the sites. We we were so interested in the history of the town and it’s many landmarks. There is beautiful medieval architecture and cathedrals. The streets are cobblestone and make the whole town feel quaint and lovely. We were surprised by how many wonderful restaurants, cafes and bars are located in the historic part of town where we stayed. It was a treat to try someplace new every day. As well, the municipal workers appear to work around the clock to keep the town so clean and well maintained, as well as supporting the many green spaces and parks. Our only obstacle was the scheduling for the local buses. Several times the bus that was due to arrive never did or drive by us even as we stood waving from the appropriate stop. We found taxi services to be better and the drivers knowledgeable of the area. We would not have visited this area of Portugal if not for our son living there, but we enjoyed our trip very much and would go back to visit some of the areas we missed this time.
Old city and Bom Jesus are very nice and worth visiting. Food and wine are excellent. It is a very safe and walkable city. Locals are helpful and friendly even when their English is limited. That being said all people involved in travel and hospitality businesses spoke good English. I enjoyed my stay in Braga.
We took the free city tour which was really interesting and informative. Helped us to get our bearings to wander around ourselves. The people are friendly and the food was reasonably priced and delicious. We ordered the daily lunch special at Frigideiras as the person at the counter beside us was having it. We think it was oxtail. The 1/2 order was more than enough for two. Dinner at Cozinha da Se was great & the servers very helpful with dinner options.
We enjoyed our stay in Braga despite the rain. Be sure to check out Praca da Republica; have breakfast at the historic Cafe Vianna while you're there. A visit to the cathedral is worth the walk as well.
Amazing small city close to Porto and Geres National Park. Incredibly friendly locals and though there’s not much to do or see besides churches, you have easy access to Porto, Lisboa and many other small towns via trains and public transport. Super cheap to stay and eat etc, and just overall a much nicer atmosphere than in the bigger cities. Decent nightlife as well for a small city.

The hotel were very efficient and we used their address to get some import mail from UK. They Phoned us when our package arrived and we returned to collect it - all very smoothly done. Thank you so much. Also had a good restaurant with a great special at Lunch time 12.50e for all you could eat including wine and coffee.

There is a small balcony where you can dry your laundry. Kitchen is fully equipped, however we like eating out when in Braga. :)
