Considered one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, charming Funchal is the capital of Madeira Island. It's an important base for tourists from all over the world that come to the Madeira hotels, B&B’s and resorts to enjoy their cliffs and beaches, as well as the island's slopes and colorful towns.
Founded in 1424, its location allowed it to quickly become an important trading harbor, attracting many prominent families. Its mild weather was the beginning of its touristic development in the 18th century, with a therapeutic and health profile.
With the establishment of the port first, and Madeira International/Funchal Airport later, the city grew to become a major destination. Nowadays, the city concentrates most of the hotels, luxury resorts and casinos on Madeira. Accommodations located in Santa Cruz, near Funchal Airport, are also available for those trying to avoid the rush.
Don’t miss a long walk around Sé historical district, and enjoy the Santa Clara Convent and the Sé Cathedral. The Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro Park and the Mercado dos Lavradores are also a must.
Whether you need an ocean-view villa or a small guesthouse, Booking.com has a wide range of Funchal accommodations.

My opinion is based on the fact that I am old and walking is quite difficult. When I came 40 years ago I did not notice that it was very up and down and there were a lot of slopes and steps for example at the Botanical Garden! Visited the art museum which is very good, wished their were more art galleries and museums.
The mosaic pavements are pretty but hazardous when wet.
One of the best factors is that it is safe even at night. Many good restaurants and prices relatively cheap. Sorry to miss the illumination of Christmas lights that were being put up.

Great island to get some sun and warm during winter season.
Great island to get some sun and warm during winter season. Not the biggest city itself and it's not so much to see in it, but it super good location from where you can take day trips and discovery island.
Many good places to try local food. One of them " Snack Bar Da Se", cozy atmosphere, professional waiters, delicious food. Thanks to Rakshya, who invited me to try "ugly fish" Espada with banana, its was interesting experience :)

Funchal is really a beautiful city, the scenery is amazing, it is very clean and with a lot of activities. One could spend a couple of days in the city and then rent a car or go on an organised tour to visit the rest of the island.

Funchal is a very laid back town and the best base for experiencing Madeira. Make sure that your hotel/appartment is located in the Old Town or by the ocean - otherwise you will find yourself on a very steep hill. There are many restaurants here but really only one menu. If you don't like seafood or fish there are not many good alternatives.

Funchal is the capital, all cruise ships stop here (three new every night), so it is somewhat crowded. Other smaller cities around the island are more of my taste, nevertheless Funchal is a very good starting point for daily trips. Should I ever come back to Madeira (I hope I will), I'd rather stay in Machico for a while, than move to the Western side of the island somewhere (to see the sunsets).

If you dont want to pay for expensive yellow taxis you can use bolt to get around. Easily available in the city but further you go some places dont use bolt. It will be local bus.

The apartment is in a quiet area, near restaurants, bakery and grocery store. It was very clean and looked just like the pictures on Booking. It had everything we needed, plus a balcony with a lovely view of Funchal. During our stay, the apartment was cleaned, new bedsheets and towels were provided.
Ana was very kind and easy to reach. She met us when we arrived and gave us maps and tips on places to visit and eat. Communication was great during our stay.
We will definitely come back here on our next visit to Madeira. ☺️
Fantastic apartment to stay in Funchal, and use as a base to explore Madeira. Located slightly out of the main city centre - about a 20min walk into Funchal central - but a great spot to enjoy local cafes and bakeries, and get immersed in the authentic Madeira culture. Cristina, the host, is excellent and communicative, and extremely helpful. Would definitely come back and stay here!
Beautiful quinta located near to the old town, with a lovely garden surrounded by a banana plantation, passion fruit and papaja trees, looking at the ocean. The owner and his family were extremely friendly and helpful and told us a lot about Madeira, Funchal and the history of the property. A nice bakery and small grocery store at walking distance.
Great location in the centre of Funchal, close to a large shopping centre. Very convenient underground garage. Funchal is a good place to stay in Madeira as the city is lively in the evening and there are many good restaurants nearby. The room was large, clean and comfortable. Thank You, Joana, for assistance.
Beautiful and clean hotel, near the old town and the beach. The hosts are great and kind, the breakfast is delicious. The view from the rooftop is amazing, the pool was great. We had a great time in the hotel and in Madeira. The island is beautiful.
Thank you, we'll back! :)
