FAQs about hotels in Guimarães

About Guimarães

Nestled in northern Portugal, Guimarães is a charming city steeped in history and tradition. The climate is Mediterranean, with warm summers averaging 85°F and mild winters around 50°F. Rainfall is common during the cooler months, making the city lush and green.

Guimarães is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture. The city's historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a must-see. The Guimarães Castle and the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza are iconic landmarks. Getting around is easy, with a reliable network of buses and taxis, or you can explore on foot to soak in the city's ambiance.

The culture of Guimarães is deeply rooted in its history. Traditional crafts like embroidery and pottery are still practiced. The local cuisine is hearty and flavorful, featuring dishes like Bacalhau à Minhota, a codfish dish cooked with onions and potatoes. The surrounding Minho region is known for its verdant vineyards, producing the light, slightly effervescent Vinho Verde.

Historic Center is good with lots of restaurants and courtyards. The cable car to the top of the mountain is a must do. It is 7.5 euros return. Residents take a lot of pride in their city. Most of the tourists are Portueguese . Prices are less than in the Algarve. Appears to be great bus service, but everything within walking distance.

Guimarães is an acient town where Portugal originated. It is quite small. It's enough for the Visitors who don't have any specific plans to spend 1 whole day to see all the most important historical sites in this city.

Some locals call it "The Heart of Portugal" because what became the country of Portugal began it's fight for liberation from Moorish Occupation here. The castle from then is still standing and is currently undergoing extensive renovation. The old city center is nicely preserved and is very walkable. Regional food is hearty and very tasty. While it is touristy, it is also a university city. Pretty lively with a good range of affordability in eating, staying, and shopping.

Guimaraes was a lovely historical town with a lot to see just walking around - historical churches, lots of restaurants and pretty sites. We went to Citania de Briterios (2,000 year old Celtic village) - a short drive away - and loved it. We could have spent longer here.

I only had two days in Guimarães, and I wish that I could have stayed for at least two more. I stayed in the historic centre, which has much to offer in terms of aimlessly wandering around and staring agog at the old buildings, visiting museums, churches, palaces, and castles, eating delicious food, and enjoying artisan shops. I also took the cable car to Mount Penha and spent a few hours exploring the caves and sites, which was not enough time to see everything. Pack a picnic and plan to spend at least three hours wandering around the top of the mountain, enjoying the breathtaking views of the city, exploring the caves and grottoes, and shining about all the people who have been on this mountain in the past 5000 years.

Guimarães is beautiful and the medieval architecture is...

Guimarães is beautiful and the medieval architecture is amazing, well preserved and comprises most of the town centre, and there's lots of it. The town is very easy to walk around and there are plenty of restaurants and things to look at. For a long stay, there are also supermarkets for self-catering and budget food options. I didn't like the tourist areas in town that cater for LARGE amounts of people, hundreds of outdoor tables and pricey menus. It can get really really busy and the narrow medieval lanes can get crowded and congested with tour groups who don't notice other people. Travel to Guimarães off peak and you will avoid the heat, the cold and the large crowds. It´s worth it for the history of Guimarães and the stunning buildings.

The apartment is nice, big, and in excellent location. Its an old Family house (Grandfather was a doctor with clinic on first floor) The owner provided breakfast ! which was very nice, rich and covered our lunch on that day too. That night we sat on cafe and had 'Toucinho do Ceu - Bacon From Heaven' (Guimaraes special) - made from almonds and many yolks (the whites were used to clarify the wine, and the yolks were given to nuns .. and used on desserts).. so this was a nice local food we hit accidently. Old town is nice.

Extremely well located Bnb with a fantastic breakfast and friendly staff. This bnb spams across multiple buildings in the same lovely street, with one of them having tables you can request to use as a temporary desk to do some work. You are also located very close to the main Guimarães attractions and eateries, and on top of a local restaurant that's an institution to the city! Make sure you have some snacks and beer / wine from the Tasca do Tio Júlio, and soak in the breeze as you eat by this great quiet street.

Location: excellent. Breakfast: was very very good. Selection of fruit, cereals, yoghurts, cooked breakfast, breads, jams, etc was much more than expected. Room: was a good size, bed very comfortable, bathroom was well appointed - everything was spotless. Although the hotel is in the centre of a popular area we did not hear any noise inside. Staff were very helpful, pleasant, and went out of their way to help us. eg online booking of seats on airport bus, taxis etc.
