Santarem is a small city north of Lisbon which is non touristy with a small but pleasant old town with a maze of narrow streets and old churches. the city park the Portas de Sol is a wonderful place to relax in the shade. It is within the old fortifications on a high ridge with stunning views of the Tejo river below. The city has good traditional restaurants which are popular and cheap but close by 10pm. City is a good base for surrounding region and has good transport links in all directions.Lisbon is less than an hour by train and Evora is ninety minutes by bus.

It's not the first city that comes to your mind when you visit Portugal but it's a good option of you'd like to be in a quite city but with still enough things to do: lots of historic and cultural spots, amazing food and very nice people.
Santarém is called the portuguese capital of Gothic style in Portugal. Wonderful tyles in the market and the railway station. Excellent meat and fruits. May be one of the hottest places in Portugal in Summer, almost 40° C.
A good hotel. Friendly people. Front desk folks super professional. A bit off the path for someone walking and you will need GPS to find it. Breakfast included, but we departed way early. Taxi's area availble and you will need one to get to a meal of choice. You can get clothes cleaned but will have to wait until 1200 the next day.
We enjoyed the location right in the historic center of Santarém and not far off the Camino Portugues. This allowed for very easy access to nice restaurants and the cathedral. Room was big, high ceiling and with comfortable beds. Bathroom was functional, quite large, but not fancy. Appropriate for this sort of room and budget. Person at the arrival desk was friendly and helpful. Spoke good english.
The Breakfast is amazing and one should not miss it when you visit Santarem. Our hosts were perfect, it felt like being family. The location is located perfectly, close to the city but very quiet and relaxing with a well maintained pool and a honesty bar. We certainly will come back to this wonderful place, strongly recommended
It’s hard to overstate how special this place is in Santarém: you can enjoy the swimming pool, right next to Roman ruins, in the main house of the medieval castle, with spectacular views over the valley. The breakfast is great, the rooms are luxurious, and the people are very welcoming.
This is a good mid-range hotel. The grain-themed decor is unusual but not bad. The staff were very pleasant. The location is in a residential neighborhood, which means it is quiet but you won’t be going to the bar across the street because there isn’t one.
Miguel is very friendly, atmosphere very good, was a bit afraid i chased him out if his house, but seemed not to be the case. Portugal and the caminho need more entrepeneurs like Miguel, this could greatly benefit rural communities.
A large 2 bedroom unit with all the necessary comforts for an enjoyable stay. Would definitely book this apartment again should we come to Santarem. Luis had provided a great selection of food for us to make breakfast.
The reception was very helpful with planning my travels south. I very modern hostel with lots of room in a four bed dorm. They give you a big towel like in a fancy hotel.
A peaceful sanctuary just a short taxi ride from Santarem. Friendly staff, happy, friendly, well cared for animals.
Clean, friendly staff. It was the only hotel that had air con that worked properly (unlike the Spanish paradors!).
Comfort familiar hotel, for leisure or work travelers. Best breakfast in town, and a very nice staff.
After several days in Porto, we needed the peace and quiet of Quinta da Cabrita. The host was friendly and helpful, the rental was clean and with amenities, and the property was small enough we could let our kids run free. They especially liked the pool!
