Located in Santiago do Cacém, just an 18-minute walk from Santiago do Cacém Castle, Casa Rodrigues provides accommodations with free bikes, a garden, barbecue facilities and free WiFi. The house was an excellent, charming part of Portuguese culture. Presented in an old fashioned style, but still being clean and comfortable. We stayed for one night before starting walking the Rota Vicentina. Our hosts, Adelaide and her husband were truly excellent. They very kindly picked us up in their car from the coach station and took us to the supermarket to buy food before driving us to the house. Although we sadly don't speak any Portuguese and they don't speak any English they took it all in their stride, using Google Translate when necessary. Everything turned out well, and we would highly recommend booking this place to stay.

Stunning views, beautiful place to visit with so much history. The Retiro do Escova restaurant was brilliant, excellent food and great service. I didn't have a car so I depended on public transport which was economic and handy to go to visit other towns nearby.
If you are interested in history and things other than beaches, this area is surprisingly full of excellent places to visit, and virtually empty of the usual crowds. The Roman ruins are some of the best in Portugal. Also just 2 hours south of Lisbon airport, so very convenient stop on way to Algrave.
Spent short time in town. Visited coast which was superb. At the Lagoa there is a very good boardwalk. Also went to Roman ruins at Mirobriga. Absolutely amazing. The countryside is beautiful with the cork forests. Also the towns are litter free which you can’t say about the Algarve!!
Historic Portuguese town. Views from the castle walls were lovely. Having a cemetery (not historical) in the centre of the castle is somewhat disconcerting. It is a beautiful cemetery but takes away the significance of the castle's history. You always have to be aware of where you are and act with respect.
Excellent local bar and restaurant near bus station. Great place to start Route Vincentia walk/ cycle. Old centre/ castle and park below castle is very nice with old tiled well and local gardens and ancient aquaduct.
We stayed at Santiago do Cacem for one night at the start of our walk on the Rota Vicentina. It has an interesting old castle at the top of the hill. There are a few local cafes / restaurants where a good meal for a low price can be found. We spent an afternoon walking around the town - which was about right.
Franziska is a lovely person who has made a beautiful job of refurbishing a traditional windmill and making her property a really special place. The property has gorgeous views all around (ocean, Serra da Arrábida, typical Alentejo landscapes and Santiago do Cacém with its cute castle) and delightful details everywhere. The windmill is comfortable and cozy and the biological pool is great. The peace, quiet and space make going there a fun and reinvigorating retreat.
