Nice city. I went for work reasons. I think there aren't so many places to visit. The beach is quite far form the city centre, so i didn't visit it. People are extremely nice and helpful, in each and single occasion, but only very few speak English. This can be a little exhausting if you don't speak Turkish. I drove from Istanbul to Izmir a scenic drive. Pier was a nice place to visit and dine by Mediterranean. Those staying at Ontur hotel must have food at Erdogan Resturant just two mins walk. So many things to see on day trips from the area: Ephesus, Pamukkale and Hieropolis, Cesme, etc. What's left of old part of town is worth a visit as are the remains of the ancient Greco-Roman town (though a lot is currently closed off). Much of the city by the water is 'new' because of the destruction of the 1922 fire, which is sad. But a great experience overall (even the taxi drivers are nice and honest, and the weather was much better than in Istanbul). Definitely want to go back.GlennSingapore
