FAQs about hotels in Honolulu

A True Water Sports Paradise

Standing proudly on the island of Oahu in the Pacific Ocean, Honolulu is the Hawaiian capital, meaning "a sheltered bay." Spreading along the white sandy beaches and supported by the strong back of the volcanic mountains, it's a real island paradise.

Honolulu's most popular and famous district, Waikiki, features the stunning Waikiki Beach decorated with hundreds of surfboards, palms and lounge chairs. It’s also a center for the city’s nightlife and shopping, especially along Kalakaua and Kuhio Avenues.

As the most popular activities in Honolulu include surfing, snorkeling, canoeing and other water sports, it's no surprise the city has a number of sandy beaches. Try Hanauma Bay, a crescent-shaped beach with rolling, green hills behind it.

For fans of hiking and exploring, nature awaits at Diamond Head Mountain, a volcanic tuff cone where you can admire the panoramic view of the city. There is also the Bishop Museum with the world’s largest collection of Hawaiian and Pacific artifacts and the Waikiki Aquarium with over 490 species of marine fauna and flora.

From hotels near Honolulu International Airport to hotels near the beach, Booking.com has plenty of properties, from cheap to luxury, for your Honolulu trip.

I worked/lived on Oahu for 5 years, awhile back.

I worked/lived on Oahu for 5 years, awhile back. Since that time Oahu has gotten a lot more crowded, and Waikiki has been renovated, especially Kalakaua Ave... Very modern, very upscale... Did not get to the North Shore, would have liked to... Did get to Kailua (daughter loved the beach there for learning body boarding), and Waimanalo (waves and current were strong the day we went there)... In general Hawaii is SUPER expensive, but in many ways it is worth it... But still - SO VERY expensive... and the weather is OH SO nice, most of the time - low humidity, trade winds, not too hot...

Honolulu is a large city so it did not seem as much like Hawaii as Maui or the Big Island. I did enjoy eating at Duke's. I enjoyed the morning sail and the turtle snorkeling trip mainly because of the staff on the catamaran.

First visit to Hawaii, stopover on way to LA.

First visit to Hawaii, stopover on way to LA. Honolulu just high-rise commercial district. Waikiki location for hotel is best if you have the budget. Walkable. Iconic beach location for tourists. One day island tour worth doing - green 'Jurassic Park' mountains and best beaches. Swim with turtles at Turtle Bay. Pearl Harbour visit v. interesting and memorial is moving. Don't have to take tour. Go independently if you can. Book passport for 3 of attractions and go to government parks website for 15 minute timed visit to memorial.

If you are staying in Waikiki and planning to drive, have...

If you are staying in Waikiki and planning to drive, have your phone ready to navigate and prepare for traffic congestion. Sometimes you need to be in the correct lane to get to where you need to go; pay attention too, to the one way streets. Depending on where you stay, it could be noisy (people, delivery trucks, tour buses) - if your hotel is on the outer edges, you might be able to avoid that. Almost everything you need is within walking distance. If you going to a tourist spot or hiking on a popular trail, get there EARLY to avoid the crowds and to get parking. Make sure to visit the Ala Moana Center for excellent shopping - go to Foodland Farms for the best, freshest poke.

Very nice but very touristy. Especially around Waikiki you will struggle to get a true relaxing experience. I had to travel a bit outside to truly realise I was in Hawai'i and not in any beach leisure location.

Location is great, close enough to the midst of Waikiki that it's easy to get everywhere pretty quickly. Room was on the cheaper end in Waikiki - was clean, comfortable and a good base for our week in Oahu. Front desk staff were great on check in helping us to store bags when we arrived early morning, and working to get us into a room just after lunch, slightly earlier than our check in time which as traveller's off an overnight flight was greatly appreciated.
