A genuine paradise on Martha’s Vineyard Lambert’s Cove Inn & Resort is one of those increasingly rare places that feels less like a hotel and more like a beautiful private retreat that one is extraordinarily fortunate to have discovered. Set in the quiet, rural heart of West Tisbury, away from the bustle of the island’s busier towns, this historic property is surrounded by gardens, mature trees and an almost tangible sense of calm. It is, quite simply, a little paradise on earth. The house has a wonderfully relaxed yet refined atmosphere. Fresh flowers are everywhere — in the rooms, the corridors and the restaurant — and they lend the entire place a sense of generosity, care and effortless beauty. There is nothing overly formal about it; instead, it feels warm, personal and genuinely welcoming. The staff were outstanding throughout: unfailingly kind, attentive and remarkably friendly, always striking exactly the right balance between professionalism and warmth. The rooms are not enormous, but they are exceptionally clean, beautifully maintained and very well considered. A coffee machine and refrigerator are provided — small details perhaps, but very much appreciated. Guests travelling with particularly heavy luggage should simply bear in mind that there is no lift; that said, the character of the old house more than compensates for it. Breakfast deserves special praise. It is abundant, beautifully prepared and notably fresh — the sort of breakfast that makes one want to linger rather than rush off to explore the island. Anyone staying at the Inn should make a point of reserving dinner at the hotel’s restaurant. The kitchen is superb. Every course was delicious, but the gently seared scallops were truly exceptional: delicate, perfectly cooked and so memorable that I could happily have ordered them again and again.
