Odd service hours for restaurants. For instance, recording at Shagger Jack's had hours and days open, but when we arrived from different cities, to meet there for lunch, it was not open at all! We ended up eating outside on the beach, which was noisy and windy, and not what we planned, but good food (something "Turtle", sorry) getting around easy, but much traffic. we would have come more off-season, if possible, but it was a birthday celebration
I loved the short walk to the beach and pier from our room. I'm a sea sheller and was disappointed that there were no shells. My dog loved jumping in the ocean and playing in the waves. Very dog friendly. One treasure we did find was a place called Hoarders, so many great finds there and loved the antiques. A must place to check out. And the ice cream shop next door to Hoarders is a must visit too, great ice cream and a good price.
We didn't eat at restaurants due to the long wait but had planned meals to eat at home. Appreciate the increased awareness of rip currents as they are deadly. Loved watching dolphins off the coast. Quaint barrier island and basically, small local stores with reasonably priced items.
Visiting in winter months is not recommended. Nothing is open & was very cold. Also do not take ferry to bald island in the winter. Nothing is open there, would not have gone if I knew that. Lighthouses we’re closed everywhere too.
If you are looking for a lively party atmosphere, Oak Island isn't the destination for you. However, if you're in the mood to relax on a stretch of beautiful uncrowded beach you've found the right place. Many folks were very excited when Publix opened a store on the island and the facility is very clean and the staff are extremely friendly. I however, found the place to be somewhat lacking on selection and very crowded. I'll stick to the Food Lion which remains the best Food Lion I've ever shopped in. I also highly recommend Pelican Seafood for fresh seafood to prepare at home (they will also cook it for you to carryout). The town of Southport is a short ride off island and has many local shops and restaurants. For a quick bite I would recommend The Provision Company for their peel & eat shrimp and locally made crab cakes. If formal dining is more your style, You just can't beat Joseph's Italian Bistro & Chop House! Their food & service is top notch!
Oak Island is beautiful. Hurricane Isaias came through but we were safe and did not have to evacuate.. Neighborhood was nice and quiet too.. also friendly folks were outside during the storm aftermath. as we talked to quite a few of them. House was soo nice and soo pretty.. Wish we didn't have to take our sheets and blankets and towels but this is understandable since Covid 19 is in the world during this time. Thanks for letting us stay in your home and also for building such a strong home during the hurricane. The rental company called and told us what to expect during the storm, such as the house swaying and it sure did sway. We were thankful to know this ahead of time. The Island was a breeze to get to the grocery stores and food restaurants.. Thanks again.. The Carroll's Concord NC
