Beautiful architecture... beautiful downtown... sad for businesses and activities. Downtown IS beautiful. The use of the buildings is great— a self-paced, historical self- tour (if you could call it that) would be advantageous... and pamphlets and such at motel. Or, if motel staff would be available to great visitors and tell them about areas to see and/or visit- like awesome museum. Ghost walk was tremendous and wonderful story tellers- so perfect. Offer more to get visitors— beautiful area and history... use the history and American Indian quarry. Quaint little shops would be phenomenal... if they could thrive with city help. More restaurants would be nice- Calumet’s was pretty dirty.
You really only need one day to see everything, the waterfall at the monument is pretty and peaceful it was definitely the highlight of the trip. Everything was easy to find. There are several second-hand, or thrift stores. We did all of our souvenir shopping st The Fort, workers were very friendly there and let you browse. Prices were low on most items and a very good variety of items to choose from. Langes restaurant was good, hot beef was better than most places and pie was excellent.
HIstoric and spiritual location. Pipestone National Monument is a fantastic destination and the staff there does a great job of interpretting its history. Downtown has fascinating historic buildings with unusual design. Most are still in use by functioning enterprises. As a destination, Pipestone is lacking in food and beverage choices.
We ate at Langes Cafe and enjoyed a nice meal at a reasonable price. We walked around town and were surprised at how vibrant the downtown area still is. The Pipestone National Monument is definitely worth two or three hours of your time. Interesting movie about Native American quarrying at Pipestone. We had the opportunity to see two artisans working on sculpting pipes and animals the morning we were at the Visitor Center.
