FAQs about hotels in San Diego

The Art of Easy Living

Sweeping along the coast against a mountain backdrop, San Diego has easy living down to a fine art. Its wonderful beaches and mild climate make it a favorite spring break destination, and with over 40 city breweries, there are plenty of ice cold beers to set the mood.

The city’s most recognizable landmark is the Hotel del Coronado, a wooden Victorian beach resort, now a National Historic Landmark. As original Spanish mission and first in California, it's has been relocated to the Mission Valley area, and Old Town San Diego still has many Colonial buildings and quirky shops. Also great for shopping are Horton Plaza and the boutiques in the beachfront neighborhoods.

The city’s most famous attraction is its zoo in Balboa Park, a few blocks from San Diego International Airport. One of the world’s largest zoos, it is well worth a visit, as is the fantastic SeaWorld, home to several killer whales. To see wildlife in its natural habitat head to La Jolla beach where harbor seals rest, or watch whales in season from Point Loma Lighthouse.

Just over the border from Mexico’s Tijuana, San Diego has a distinctly Latin American vibe and a variety of accommodations encompassing apartments, motels, B&Bs and hotels. See Booking.com for the best deals.

Great weather, lots to do and see, lots of interesting and beautiful people, friendly for the most part. Wide variety of great places to eat and drink, lots of local breweries and bars, many appropriate for the whole family. A bit more expensive than other places but what place isn't these days?! Besides it's southern California, close to beaches, on the bay, cool urban scene, as well as places with more of a country vibe, desert not far, Tijuana just to the south. Expanded trolley lines to get to various spots all around town, including down to the border to walk into Tijuana (although a car or Uber/Lift will almost definitely be necessary). They're currently doing a major upgrade to the airport (Lindbergh Field), which is in very close proximity to downtown and on San Diego bay which makes for an absolutely beautiful scene flying in and driving from the airport or car rental lot. A lot of places to stay that definitely look and feel like "paradise" but with some searching and creative planning you can still have a great time in SD on a tighter budget.

Doing the hop on hop off bus was great to get a sample of the city. We saw things we wouldn't have otherwise. We could have spent longer at the maritime museum but our time was running out for the last bus. We did a day trip to Tijuana which was really fun and interesting too.

Beautiful city, but traffic is horrible and freeways are insane. If you plan to stay in one area and walk to nearby attractions, it’s fine. But if you plan to drive to different parts of the city, the freeway system is very confusing, traffic is always heavy and drivers are quite rude.

As our stay was short and our focus the Breeders cup weekend at Del Mar our time for visiting San Diego limited. However we used the Old Town transit centre as our means of travel to north or South. The Coaster train is fantastic value for money $6.50 to Solana Beach and wonderful views of the coast at Sorrento Valley and 50% reduction for seniors aged 65+. We used the Hop on bus service near Old Town state park and can recommend as supper way to see the City with personal highlights island city of Corronado, Balboa park which could spend many hours there, and the USS midway were our highlights. Shopping malls a plenty we ate at Seasons 52 a restaurant at Westfield Centre, north of City and the steak was a delight. Fashion Valley shopping mall has all your needs if you love shopping. Taxis a plenty from hotels who in our case had a great relationship with a provider and arrived within 5 minutes of any request
