Set in Winona, 30 mi from La Crosse, Alexander Mansion Bed & Breakfast offers a garden and free WiFi. Guests at the bed and breakfast can enjoy a Full English/Irish breakfast. The warmth and hospitality of the owner, Richard, is remarkable .. he has a deep appreciation for the charm, history and craftsmanship of this magnificent home. His attention to detail, and to a hundred "little extras" is heartwarming. The home itself is impressive but welcoming and beautifully comfortable.
Winona is a beautiful little town. There are Two large well known colleges and a Votec. Two very large corporations based there also. What it fails to have is any upscale restaurants or restaurant chains, this is a blue-collar, college town. If you're looking for after-dark excitement, this is not the place. If you're looking to walk around and see nature or take a boat ride with people who are polite and friendly, your in the right place.
Roads to get in and out are curvy and hilly. Not a place i'd like to go in the snow, however I do love the bluffs and the views. We came to the Equestrian Center for an event, typically we stay in our trailer, however we came for a dog event and not horses, so a hotel was required. The Green Mill is a nice bar/restaurant and easy to get to.
Winona has many wonderful trails to walk and explore, different sites to visit in learning of the history of the area and its people. It has a small town feeling and was easy to get around. The people there were extremely welcoming and friendly.
Number one, We really liked the Alexander Mansion where we stayed. Comfortable, charming and a terrific value. Number two, loved the building restorations and vitality of downtown Winona. This place is coming up hard to being a wonderful tourist destination! Number three, loved the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. Originals by masters like Picasso, Toulouse-Lautrec, Manet, Monet, Renoir, Gaugain, and many more live here. Who knew?!!!!
Winona is a beautiful little river (and college) town. Although the 2nd Street area and certain others are a bit blighted, there are many signs of development and revitalization, and there are many good neighborhoods to walk and scenic overlooks (Sugarloaf) and lakes to enjoy. Probably best enjoyed in the summer or fall months.
We went with another couple, just a fun outing. Visited Elmer's Auto's near Fountain city, J. R. Watkins Museum and Store and the Polish Cultural Institute both located conviently in Winona. Friendly, interesting people at all three locations. Nice trip!
The Innkeepers were friendly and helpful. The guests were intelligent, warm breakfast companions. It was so close to the River Shakespeare Fedtival.
