FAQs about hotels in Montevideo

Laid-Back South American Capital

Located on the north bank of the Rio de la Plata, the city of Montevideo is Uruguay’s capital, largest city and main harbor and economic hub. Claimed by the Spanish, Portuguese and British, the city now reflects the typical South American cultural patchwork. With a strong Italian and Spanish legacy, its soul dances to the rhythm of tango and the African-influenced "candombe."

With approximately 1.5 million people, it houses almost half of the country’s population. Montevideo has a rich cultural life with important institutions like the Solis Theater.

Carnival is Montevideo's most significant celebration, and the "murgas" play and dance "candombe" in the streets, turning the city into a big party. If you plan to book a hotel in Montevideo for carnival, check the availability beforehand!

Don’t miss the "Ciudad Vieja" old town, Independence Square and the views from the top of the Salvo Building. Rodo Park is the most traditional park in the city, while the "Rambla" esplanade offers 8 miles of sandy beaches.

Whether you prefer a cozy B&B in the historic district, a hotel on the beach, or accommodations near Carrasco International Airport, check out the Montevideo deals available on Booking.com!

Friendly locals, perfect weather, lots to see and take in on foot. Food was amazing, especially the chivitos. At night it did not feel as safe in the old town and seafront areas as it feels in the daytime. That, and maybe the amount of graffiti everywhere, was the only area that need to be improved. Overall though it was a lovely both to visit and I look forward to visiting again.

Not really that much to see in Montevideo.

Not really that much to see in Montevideo. You can walk through the main old town area in an hour or so. If you are into museums there are a few to see, but nothing special. The best thing about the area is the great beaches. We did go to the castle which is in a really "dodgy" area. However the view is fantastic, the entrance really cheap (50 pesos) so it is worth making the effort just for the view over the whole of Montevideo.

Every transaction you make you will be over charged, the only people that didn't over charge me were the bus drivers. I later found out it's called the 'english tax', basically If you speak English the price triples. For example beware of taxi drivers that will take wrong turns to increase the bill, this problem is endemic in Uruguay, literally everyone will try to over charge you. That said there were a small number of people that didn't try to overcharge, I guess less than 10%. As you can probably tell being 'finessed' everytime I left the hotel ruined it for me.

Montevideo in the winter is extremely tranquil.

Montevideo in the winter is extremely tranquil. There are no crowds anywhere. The food is fabulous, as is the local wine. It is very safe walking around, day or night, but you will not enjoy the sad situation of most of the buildings being covered in graffiti, which seems to be typical for most of the big cities in South America. Local and Highway buses are very convenient and inexpensive, so don’t waste your money on taxis. Montevideo is very walkable and so I recommend that travelers spend time on two feet to see the city.

Montevideo is different from many other South American cities. More like a European city from an architectural point of view. It has a fascinating history, great museums (Andes 1972) for example, a lovely port market with different restaurants, and a great street market on Sundays. A free walking tour of the old town gives you a great deal of the history of Uruguay and Montevideo. Make sure you watch a live football game as Uruguay is all about football :)

The hotel is excellent! Very well located, 100 meters from Poncitos beach, with restaurants, shops, currency exchange, and markets within walking distance. The room is very big, comfortable. Excellent bathroom with new towels and bedding. Breakfast is amazing, lots of variety. The staff is very polite. We stayed twice at this hotel on our trip to Uruguay, and we will certainly stay again in the next one.

Everything. The hostel was very cozy and it was a perfect place to connect with other travelers as the atmosphere was very familiar. Everything was cleaned once a day and in the rooms heating was available which helps a lot during the Uruguayan winter. In the evenings they even lit fire in the fireplace. I definitely recommend this place to everyone who is going to Montevideo.
