I was born in Montevideo but moved abroad 40 years ago. Montevideo changed a lot but not for the better. The city is noisy, dirty, with ill maintained sidewalks and lots of traffic. Where some people see progress I see graffiti defacing almost every wall and building. Vandals have no respect even for the most important public buildings like the National Library and the historic Public University, or the historic site of the former newspaper El Día and the Jockey Club and even hospitals and monuments. Almost every private home or residential building is surrounded by metal security fences, electrified fences and barbwire. Besides broken tiles, sidewalks are neglected and overtaken by weeds. People seems to have changed their eating habits and the result is a lot of overweight never seen before in Uruguayan population. Legal marihuana is annoying because wherever you go you are exposed to the smell of the drug even at the beach, outdoor dining places and sport arenas.
Montevideo may almost be like a "mini" Buenos Aires in some respects with the French and Italian architectural influences, but it also has some nice beaches and very, very, very little homelessness. Drivers are courteous and you don't feel as if you're in a city of 1.5M people. Dining is not inexpensive but everything else seemed in line with other cities. I did find the "free" walking tour a bit of a rip off as it's really anything but free. I am more than happy to tip the tour guide at the end; never a problem, but when she said she expects at least 500 pesos (about $12.50) per person, that was a bit of a turn off for me. Other than that, the people are nice and helpful here.
Interesting place. Go straight to the Tourist Information Centre as they are great and will tell you all ‘what to do’ and not to do, and even call a cab or Uber for you. The old town is great and eat at the market there for an amazing meal. Also Carusco is an amazing suburb - bus 40 ‘una away and there you have a beach and places to stay with swimming pools - all more affordable than in downtown Montevideo. Also, the boat trip from Buenos Aires is very well run and it’s a great short trip for Argentina with amazing sunsets!
We walked the rambla along waterfront for 7 miles and it was lovely. Lots of locals out exercising. However when we wanted to eat dinner we didn’t realize all the restaurants were set off the rambla and up the side streets in the neighborhoods. We didn’t have wifi so we couldn’t see them. When we got the bus back to central we went through all the neighborhoods and saw dozens of great restaurants. Our mistake. We were amazed at all the apartment high rises right on the waterfront and thought how wonderful the locals can enjoy that location. So I hope it’s affordable for everyone!
Beautiful city that is growing and modernizing. Still many contrasts and social differences. Good offering of tours and places to visit. Good gastronomy. You can get around safely but of course with precautions. The "Rambla" is a nice place for jogging, biking or just walking and relaxing. Restaurants that I can recommend for a nice dinner: La Pulpería, El Viejo Sosa, La Barra 1114, El Berretín. Altamente recomendable "Baco Vino y Bistro" Lunch and dinner Prices in the range of U$D 25/30 per person. Few homeless people in the streets. Sidewalks in the internal streets are in terrible condition and the city is a bit dirty
Montevideo is as expensive as Nice, France while being so dangerous that coffee houses BUZZ you in like a gold cashing establishment. They do take credit cards everyone and unlike Buenos Aries, everything does function. A chicken burger at McDonalds (NOT the meal, just the burger) is 10 euro is 380 Pesos. Punta del Este was as expensive as Nice while the ocean was BROWN from the river. I live in Milan and I'm used to paying high prices in Milan, French Riviera, Paris but all of those places give you value for you money. Montevideo is like paying Manhattan Prices to be in COMPTON.
Ciudad Vieja, Montevideo
Very clean rooms, good bathrooms, great value for money. The location is right in the middle of the old city of Montevideo. This puts you right in the middle of major tourist attractions, but bear in mind that there isn't a huge selection of places to eat and drink nearby at night (you'll be fine for lunch). This is more of a quirk of Montevideo than a quirk of the hotel - other neighbourhoods might have more nightlife, but less to do during the day. There's a shared lounge bit with free coffee, which is really handy.
The staff is very friendly and can help you with anything you need. The breakfast is also delicious with uruguayan dishes and very sweet lady at the kitchen. The room is big and comfortable with a dining table and also a desk for work. The bathroom has a bathtub which makes some night very relaxing. The hotel deliveries a lot more for the price they charge. Totally worthy.
I loved the Hotel location! It was close to Punta Carretas Shopping Mall and there were lots of options to have dinner and to buy some stuff. From the Hotel it was easy to go anywhere in Montevideo and it was also close to the beach. The WiFi was great and free. The room was enormous and comfortable.
The room was very nice (including nice balcony) and the whole hotel is very pretty and comfortable. The location is very good, the breakfast as well. The best of this hotel are the 2 gentleman Enmanuel and Nelson, who were great and helped us with so many nice recommendations and reservations!
Ciudad Vieja, Montevideo
Easily the nicest hotel I stayed in while in Uruguay. Comfortable and designed exceptionally. Housekeeping was magnificent. I loved the little touches. Very accommodating all round. A great place to stay at the end of a trip, when you need some comfort and nice surroundings.
Everything , the Manager great person , the Staf exelent , the hotel very confortable , very clean the location exelent tne value exelent , the breafast exelent , it was an exelent stay on Montevideo , very higtly recommended .
Room and balcony was very spacious. Bed was comfortable. Not all of the staff spoke English. There is only one Front Desk person at a time and you can't get out of the hotel when he steps away from the Desk
Modern style hotel, we'll run, nice staff. Great breakfast buffet. Large room, good beds, strong WiFi. Many stores and restaurants near by . Metro and buses one block away.
Eveeything is completely bad, from the poor maintenance of the facilities and the service in general to the breakfast. It is a shame this hotel could be ranked 4 stars.
Nice room. Lovely staff. Very nice breakfast - perhaps less International but more Uruguayan delicacies, which we loved.
Excellent location, incredibly warmth and cordial attention of all people serving at the Hotel, Incredible Team !
Nice hotel, in an amazing area. Bed was very comfortable.
Loved the Hotel and location.
