This was the second time I stayed at this hotel. Both time there was no hot water, so I had to shave with cold water and shower with cold water, which it absolutely ridiculuos. I asked for a discount and they did not offer to me. In addition, the receptionist did not answer the phone, I was calling at the reception numerous times and it took over 25 minutes for him to answer. Also the floor was scratched, the mattress sunk and the plug were loose so it was hard to charge up my laptop and mobile phone. Very disappointing. Noise coming in off other rooms at 1 AM!

Located on the north bank of the Rio de la Plata, the city of Montevideo is Uruguay’s capital, largest city and main harbor and economic hub. Claimed by the Spanish, Portuguese and British, the city now reflects the typical South American cultural patchwork. With a strong Italian and Spanish legacy, its soul dances to the rhythm of tango and the African-influenced "candombe."
With approximately 1.5 million people, it houses almost half of the country’s population. Montevideo has a rich cultural life with important institutions like the Solis Theater.
Carnival is Montevideo's most significant celebration, and the "murgas" play and dance "candombe" in the streets, turning the city into a big party. If you plan to book a hotel in Montevideo for carnival, check the availability beforehand!
Don’t miss the "Ciudad Vieja" old town, Independence Square and the views from the top of the Salvo Building. Rodo Park is the most traditional park in the city, while the "Rambla" esplanade offers 8 miles of sandy beaches.

Every transaction you make you will be over charged, the only people that didn't over charge me were the bus drivers. I later found out it's called the 'english tax', basically If you speak English the price triples. For example beware of taxi drivers that will take wrong turns to increase the bill, this problem is endemic in Uruguay, literally everyone will try to over charge you. That said there were a small number of people that didn't try to overcharge, I guess less than 10%.
As you can probably tell being 'finessed' everytime I left the hotel ruined it for me.

Montevideo in the winter is extremely tranquil.
Montevideo in the winter is extremely tranquil. There are no crowds anywhere. The food is fabulous, as is the local wine. It is very safe walking around, day or night, but you will not enjoy the sad situation of most of the buildings being covered in graffiti, which seems to be typical for most of the big cities in South America. Local and Highway buses are very convenient and inexpensive, so don’t waste your money on taxis. Montevideo is very walkable and so I recommend that travelers spend time on two feet to see the city.

Montevideo is different from many other South American cities. More like a European city from an architectural point of view. It has a fascinating history, great museums (Andes 1972) for example, a lovely port market with different restaurants, and a great street market on Sundays. A free walking tour of the old town gives you a great deal of the history of Uruguay and Montevideo. Make sure you watch a live football game as Uruguay is all about football :)

Didn't have too much of a chance to see the city as it rained for much of the time. Liked the Mercado Agricole very much though. And noticed that there are nice beaches, though the water in the mouth of the Parana was quite muddy. Seems a friendly place.
I really enjoyed the location (Punta Carretas), it's not close to the old downtown but it's a really good neighbourhood and the Hotel Staff are really good and they offer some good meals with discount there. I enjoyed my stay there and I recommend it.
Lovely breakfast and excellent concierge. We also liked the terrace. The historical touches are much appreciated and give some welcome context - each room is dedicated to a significant Uruguayan figure.
The hotel is well situated, clean, and value for money in the city centre (which I find better to explore Montevideo for the first time in a few days than the other areas).
Great hotel in the centre of Montevideo. Clean room and good Wi-Fi connexion. Fantastic breakfast, better than most hotels. Friendly and helpful staff. Recommended.
