Demir, Villa Oasis, and Hotel Rayhon got great room view-related reviews from travelers in Bukhara.
Bukhara is changing rapidly, with Uzbekistan gearing up for the coming tourist invasion as it makes tourism rather than cotton its number one economic priority. As the Uzbekistan president said last year (quoted to me approvingly by two separate Uzbeks): "why sell 10kg of cotton for 5000 sum when you can sell one cup of coffee to a tourist for the same?" Old neighbourhoods (often terribly poor, downtrodden ones, granted) are being swept away and the place is being a bit sanitised like Samarkand and Khiva so as not to offend well-off westerners, Koreans, Chinese etc. If I had had $100 for every hotel I saw being built, and every old property being made into a hostel, I would be a very rich man. BUT... the Islamic architecture of Bukhara is still breathtakingly beautiful and for any student of the subject like me, absolutely essential. And of course you might like your latte, even though coffee is not an Uzbek drink at all. Just don't expect the town to be the hair-raising, mad, seething town of those 19th century travellers' tales. It's becoming a town of stunning monuments, on the tourism marketing guys', independent travellers' and western cultural tourists' idea of the "Silk Route". If you want to see a bit of authentic Bukhara popular religious/cultural life (and fewer pink people!), don't miss the out-of-town mausoleum complex of the great Sufi saint Bakhauddin Naqshbandi. If, like me, you are a Muslim it is extraordinarily moving, but it is extremely beautiful and welcoming to all visitors.
Bukhara is a very pleasant city to spend your time. Historical sites, public facilities, people, and food all make the trip worth your money. And also, it is one of the cleanest city in entire Uzbekistan, I think second only to the capital, Tashkent.
Bukhara was very interesting to explore and we enjoyed our visit. It's larger than Khiva, but you can still walk everywhere. English is widely spoken and tourists are everywhere. There's lots of places to eat but do ask for menu first and ask for the bill at the end. A couple of times when we didn't do it we were clearly overcharged. The only negatives were some of the souvenirs sellers, we met quite a few very arrogant ones. We haven't had this neither in Khiva, nor Samarkand. We were told that their handmade embroidered pillow cases (abstract and cat designs) are from India, so if you want to buy local ones buy Suzani style only.
Totally amazing place, full of madrassahs, mosques and caravanserai, so much hand-craft too. Eating and enjoying a drink in the Lyabi square is a must, as is the German Cafe Wishbone. If you are tired of mutton, the Wishbone can supply very tasty omlettes and apple strudel. To me the Ark Fortress was a disappointment, no views form there, and some passable museums. Further on from the Ark the Bolo Hauz mosque with its tall elegant columns is worth a visit, and further on again in the splendid Samani Park is a beautiful and different mausoleum to Ismail Samani, and a mausoleum on the site where Prophet Job struck the ground and a spring appeared. On the other side of the town the cute Chinor Minor is worth visiting if you can find it.
It’s a very beautiful and unique place. I will go back if I have a chance. Easy to walk around, people are friendly, great food and great history. Old town is definitely the place to stay. It’s worth to have a good guide to have a good understanding about the city. One day of walking tour and one day car trip to go to Chor Bakr and Summer Palace is a must.
Everything is perfect except there is a major construction in front of the hotel. Comfort stay, tasty breakfast and friendly people would definitely make me recommend for those who visit to Bukhara. Not to forget the strategic location which can walk to everywhere of Bukhara !
