Bukhara was great, probably the favorite of the cities I visited in Uzbekistan. The others being Tashkent and Khiva. I could have easily stayed another day or three here. Locals are super friendly (they LOVE Americans, so represent our country well!) Food is great and it is one of the most unqiue cities/countries I have visited.
Bukhara felt quite authentic, but will probably change in a few years, are they're building like crazy... So GO NOW! Chor Minor worth a visit, but my favorite sight was the Khalon Minaret when the sun was setting down and the colors changing. If you don't mind tourist restaurants, there's one that has a view on the Minaret. Food is a bit overpriced for the country (but totally affordable to Westerners), but go eat there a bit before the sun sets. Don't forghet the old city walls, a lot of people just don't go, unfortunately. The Ark is beautiful from outside, but disappointing inside (my opinion, of course)...
Bukhara was beautiful and a much bigger town to walk through then I expected. We really loved the shopping and could have spent our whole day buying things. The best time was the excursion to a family owned pottery business where we saw how they make their handmade pottery followed by how they make homemade bread in an old oven. We ate lunch there too. The food is freshly made and organic. So delicious!
Great city with history. Friendly locals in general but the Tourism Board should look into developing an honest and accountable tourism as many merchants and restaurants tried to charge much higher price with no standard guide/charge. Always ask for menu with price or insist on the price of the food. Also some sights are also charging with no proper cash counter and with no consistency. So over time, unfortunately, this will not sustainable.
The Timurid architecture is the star, but wandering the back alleys of the old town and out in the new town was interesting too. Visited the bazaar and also took a trip to the Amir's 19th century summer palace, a mausoleum of a relative of the prophet, and the shrine of Behuddin Naqsband, founder of a Sufi order. Interesting to watch people go about their business away from the tourist heart of old Bukhara.
Bukhara is a great city but like Samarkand (which I liked less) it is overrun with people trying to sell you things. Most of the historical sites have all been turned into shopping bazaars. It’s very odd, actually. Imagine the Duomo in Florence with hawkers inside. There are two sets of prices and they start very high with tourists. I bought a scarf in the local market for less than $2 while in the tourist area they ask $10 or more. Everyone is trying to extract money from you - it gets exhausting when you are trying to focus on the beauty of the city. I found the people less warm than in Tajikistan, probably because they are so focused on selling to you. That said, it is a beautiful and atmospheric place. I’d come here and skip Samarkand.

The hotel is placed inside a restored caravanserai: the rooms are quite small but the structure is very scenographic. I loved my stay in this hotel also for the kindness of the family who hosted us. Probably the most comfortable hotel we have stayed in uzbekistan. The position is excellent in my opinion: just two minutes from the main square of Bukhara where it's possible to find many people at any time.
