The city is a messy bunch of old Soviet brutalist buildings mixed with modern ones, but the Soviet-ness of the place is so much more obvious than some of the places I've been to. You can explore anywhere, and there's plenty to see. I would recommend that you start from the Amir Timur square or the Memorial To The Victims Of Repression (near the Tashkent Tower). I don't speak Russian very well, but knowing a few keywords do help to get you around. It is a very easy city to go around and I managed to use the city's metro and get a few cab rides around. People are friendly - met a young Uzbek family of three who were in Tashkent for their vacation while in the metro, and we chatted just fine with my very limited Russian and their very limited English. One of the taxi driver actually turned up the volume to Led Zep and Pink Floyd when he saw me nodding my head to the tune. Awesome fella. Not without risks, the airport taxi driver asked to change my Kazakhstan Tenge for the local currency. I found out later that I was cheated on the exchange rate to the grand total of USD2.00. I needed the So'm to at least sustain until I get to a money changer. If you are ever caught in this situation, USD5.00 is all you should ever spare. It'll get you water and biscuits and another taxi ride to the money changer. Money changers are hard to come by in Tashkent. They do the exchanges in banks. Expect it to be fairly difficult to find. You may ask around, but again, a little Russian language will go a long way. My usual meals here consisted of plov (umm...Uzbek fried rice?) and shashlik, and maybe a salad. My stay isn't long enough to allow me to explore more, and spending two separate days in transit is definitely not enough time. I'd come back to visit, that's for sure.
Once you finally extricate yourself and your luggage from the airport (which can be a harrowing experience) Tashkent is an interesting place. It’s been rebuilt after a 1966 earthquake, so doesn’t have the old-city charm of Bukhara or Samarkand, but its wide boulevards and new buildings decorated with traditional motifs are beautiful. There is much to see and do for the curious traveler.
Lovely city, friendly local and very passionate. Transportation is well developed, can get to most places with metro system. The mosques are decorated with beautiful colours, love the Tiffany blue tops. And with the museums you will gain a new vision of Central Asia
Tashkent is one of my favorite locations in Central Asia. I experience hospitality and comfort during all the stays every time. If you prefer local cuisine there are many good places to visit. In case you want to try something else I would recommend Palete restaurant, Plov and Assorti.
If you are looking interaction with friendly locals it's better to go to Fergana or Kokand. Tashkent is clean and tranquil city. I suggest to use the metro to move around the city. We found few places were staff show hospitality.
Tashkent is very interesting. It's probably where you will start your trip in Uzbekistan. If you have a limited time on your trip (two weeks or less), I think limit your time in the city so you can explore the more scenic sites of the country. That said, Tashkent seems like a place that is great to spend 3 days, tough to spend 5 days, but probably pretty good to stay for a longer-term as you get to know it as a local. Tashkent is a nice, mid-sized city, so it can take a while to get around and see it all. The scale is less walkable than other cities in the country, but its parks and monumental buildings are very striking and unique. The metro is easy to use, and its stations are a destination of their own. Cash is king is Uzbekistan. Forget about your visa, even at the airport (including if you get an extra bag to check for all your purchases)! USD is your main source of currency for any souvenir or bazaar shopping you do. Uzbek Sums are your currency for dining, shopping at local stores, or visiting museums and cultural sites. Exchange your USD for Sum at your hotel on an as-needed basis only. I didn't book my hotel through Booking, so it seems I can't leave a review, but I stayed at ART Hotel. The staff is very helpful and accommodating. The manager Pavel is the person I communicated with to help plan my trip and arrange my Letter of Invitation, and he made what I thought would be a difficult process very easy and accessible. If you are looking to buy an Uzbek musical instrument, you can get them on Saqichmon Ko'chasi, which is a major road adjacent to the Chorsu Bazaar. Oh, and my best tip for your trip to Uzbekistan -- buy and wear one of the nice black embroidered skullcaps you see at the markets. I thought doing this would make me look like a silly tourist, but across the entire country it endeared me to so many people who seemed genuinely happy by it and not making fun.

The best hostel I've been in Uzbekistan. The breakfast is tasty and you can eat a lot, the dorm is very large and you have privacy thanks to the curtains. The strongest wifi I've experienced in this country. The staff members are super helpful and do everything to make you feel at home, they also provide a laundry service for a cheap price. The cleaning lady is also very kind and she's doing a great job. And the best was the manager's "daughter", Masha, she's the cutest ! I strongly recommend this hostel.

Since that was a new hotel I worried a lot, but there is no need to worry. The hotel is very clean and staff was so kind. I liked how every morning you can hear a bird call from the room's window and hotel breakfast was so delicious! Also there is an open-air terrace where me and my family spent a nice time. We had very happy travel because of the nice atmosphere in this hotel. If I'll have an opportunity to go to Uzbekistan, I'll surely come to this hotel again.

Hotel is very clean, has very cool authentic pieces in the room (rugs, walls, curtains, tea sets, etc.). Hotel staff is very accommodating, helped us with exchange of foreign currency, cut up fruits we brought from Bukhara, did laundry and ironing, arranged for evening tea etc. Additionally you can arrange for a car rental right in the hotel. I think as far as value for money goes, this hotel is hard to beat in Tashkent! Highly recommend!

My friend and I had a quick stop over in Tashkent, arriving late at night and leaving in the morning. We arranged transport from the airport to the property for $5, which was a plus. Check in was easy and we were given a private room, since the dorm we were supposed to stay in was almost full and it was late. Breakfast was served early and was simple but sufficient. Would recommend for a quick stop over.

The hotel was comfortable, the breakfast was very good with lots to choose from each day. The room was small but perfectly fine and the Internet was reliable and good enough to listen to the online radio. I didn't use the in room TV. I liked it and would stay again next time I visit Tashkent. There are several decent places to eat nearby and it is a short walk to the centre of the city.

We had an excellent stay! Anvar took us to the tour guide train station and helped us buy tickets, which saved us a lot of time and hassle. The room was great he even turned on the sauna for us. He had great advice on the city and breakfast was perfect, and he has even offered to store our bags so that we can visit Tashkent again on a long airport layover. Highly recommended!

Super cheap and clean, welcoming stuff: they did everything they could to make guests feel at home. The breakfast offered was budget, but had watermelon included, which was super tasty. Lockers were offered for free, though one'd have to leave UZS 25K as a deposit for the key. There are also separate rooms available, which makes the facility into an affordable hotel.

The staff was super nice, the meals at the hotel are good. The rooftop terrace is a good place to chill. Good transfer in the middle of the night from the airport.
