We were traveling from East London to Pietermaritzburg and...
We were traveling from East London to Pietermaritzburg and wanted to break the trip with an overnight stop. You are really limited to Khowa (formerly Elliot) and Maclear, which has marginally more choice and is nearer halfway. It also has an amazing restaurant, very reasonable, at The Ranch.

What a pleasant stay it was!
What a pleasant stay it was! We experienced a peaceful atmosphere from the start of our stay and received warm hospitality on arrival and throughout our one- day stay.....we would have loved to stay longer. We have already recommended the Sheeprun Farmstay to our friends. We hope that everything will stay the same...never change !

A very satisfactory stay in Maclear. The room was comfortable, there was a coffee/tea station and had what we needed without too many frills. We ate dinner (must be pre-booked) which was very good as was the breakfast (included in price) the following morning. The owners were very pleasant people and the staff were polite and accommodating. The place is situated on the fringe of the town so you are not disturbed by the daily hustle and bustle of town.

Since several people had explicitly advised us against driving via Mthatha, we took the R56. This road was trouble-free and the stopover in Maclear totally OK.
The receptionist fumbled a bit, but was very charming and friendly.
The room was spacious and well-equipped. The bed was comfortable.
Dinner could be had on site and that was a good choice. Breakfast was also absolutely fine with plenty of choice.
Parking was safe in the enclosed grounds.

It was the best furnished room ever. Such attention to details and cleanliness are hard to fine even in 4-5 stars hotels. The property is owned by a family who are so passionate about making you feel welcomed and comfortable. High quality delicious meals in the restaurant. Very filling tasty breakfast in the morning.
