We loved this place. An historic building from 1899, this was an amazing experience. The grounds were amazing, as was the incrtedible swimming pool. We loved the bar next door, as well as the impressive breakfast. Our dinner was exceptional, and our server, Linda, was amazing. We loved the cleanliness of the hotel and the friendliness of the staff. The check in experience was very welcoming. The museum across the street, South Africa's largest privately owned museum, was a splendid surprise. We walked into the nearby village, and were met by friendly, smiling people who also made us feel welcomed.

What a discovery!!! And that's coming from a really picky traveler. We were looking for a night over place on our way north but when we arrived at Rooilande farm we decided immediately to stay an extra night. The area is huuuge, you're driving good 20 min from the main road. Bungalows look brand new, super well designed. Rooms are more than spacious, you get storage area, well equipped kitchen, bathroom with beautiful bathtub with window next to it. The highlight however is a terrace facing the valley. You see nothing else but sky and hills. A zebra occasionally walks in the distance to a water tank. Absolute peace and quiet. There are several animals on the farm almost all of them rescues bunch of horses, ostrich a dog, a cat, few Alpacas. All of it plus exceptional hosts made our stay a divine experience. We wish we could stay there longer.

If you like history it's a lovely place to stay for a night or two. Trains come through the town, if that is your thing. 2 museums both worth a look. Cute gift shop and coffee shop Lovely old bar Not much else London bus is brilliant, does a 10 minute tour of the town

It was lovely to be part of an awesome and rich history and to explore the museum, transport museum and the whole little town - so very interesting and one can walk through the whole town within an hour! The Hotel and pub were outstanding with their meals. It was great to go on the world's shortest tour on the red bus. It is full of such an interesting history and everything makes one feel that one is back in the 1800's but at the same time it is a peaceful town where one could truly "rest"! Unfortunately we didn't see/hear any ghosts and we were not able to see inside the Courthouse, Pink Chapel, Logan's Tweedside Lodge and Schreiber's cottage! We also couldn't find the cemetry.

It certainly felt like a real life experience of a bygone era. Enjoyed the car museum, the old red bus, and just walking down the street and observing and visiting the various buildings. Enjoyed a good coffee, and delicious cake at the Coffee House.

Lord Milner in Matjiesfontein is well worth a stop if only for lunch or afternoon tea, and a great overnight stop along the N1. Do not just drive past, drive in and enter a bygone age. Staff and hotel are great and it is an ideal journey break

Matjiesfontein is really 1 Street and a railway stop.

Matjiesfontein is really 1 Street and a railway stop. We stopped for an overnight stay on a road trip from Johannesburg. We walked around on our own and then went into a very old Lairds bar for a late afternoon drink. Staff incredibly friendly and helpful. For the price of the bed and breakfast, on the expensive side it was not good value for money. The dinner was expensive and very average, we had lamb shank, no wows. Dining room had mop strings on the legs of tables which to me is not acceptable. Perhaps staff need training. The breakfast was lovely. The room- there were 2 usable plugs in the room and I was unable to blow dry my hair using the mirror on the wall as the distance was to great. No attention to detail. Bathroom had nowhere to put anything even though there was space. We put toiletry bags on the floor. Very basic room for the nearly R2000.00 cost. The hotel needs a revamp. It's a do once in your lifetime place.

Matjiesfontein is absolutely tiny.

Matjiesfontein is absolutely tiny. There are 3 small museums (1 was closed), a coffee shop, a tourist tat shop, the hotel bar and restaurant, other accommodation...and that is about it. The buildings are very quaint and it's lovely and quiet with lots of birdsong, but this is strictly a one-night stay on the way somewhere else to my mind.
