This area of the Drakensberg Mountains truly is exceptionally beautiful. There is a lot to do for active people , as well as interesting places to visit or be spoilt at, for the rest of us. The Farmer's Fork by day and The Saleyard at night are good restaurants.
A lovely small town with lots of activities. It is very cold so I would recommend dressing up warm even in Summer. The roads are not well managed so allow yourself extra travel time to avoid the pot holes. I will definitely give it a second run.
There are lots to do in Winterton for adventure junkies but also if you just want to relax in the quietness of the area. There are lots of hikes to beautiful waterfalls and interesting caves that are well marked from any of the resorts.
There are lots of fun things to do in Winterton with the familyy, please stay at a resort instead of booking a lodge it BNB you will thank me later, the roads are very bad, tons of potholes and only one tire shop which doesn't keep stock on hand so be careful on the roads.
The town is busy with people. Does at times feel unsafe. Roads are not in a good condition, but the town is centrally located. Supermarkets are open at night but there aren't many restaurants to choose from. Took some frozen foods to reheat.
The Potholes from The pass to Berville are very bad and also the road and potholes in Winterton are shocking! Please drive slow and carefully! The Waffle hut/Pizza place just passed Winterton on the Route R 600 is lovely and has play area , putt putt and and antique shop and carpet weavers so really is worth a break on the drive.
Winterton
Self catering. Splendid view of the valley. Buck and baboons roaming freely in the estate. You couldnt get closer to the mountains without entering at Monks Cowell. Plenty of amenities within easy reach. The dam complete with hydro electric generator which doesnt detract from the rural setting. An interesting essential oil extraction plant producing oil from local herbs and trees

The food is a definite highlight of any stay at the Cathedral Peak Hotel. The selection is awesome. It's a pity the cheese and biscuit option has been removed from the buffet.
The home is very cozy and fully equipped to make our self catering pleasant. There is plenty of room for large families that need a retreat away from the rush of the city life.
Great view of the Champagne region of Drakensberg. The restaurant was really enjoyable as well as the bar. The lodge is situated quite well within the region.
