Good house in a quiet traditional Portuguese aldeia. In the kitchen there are all necessary utensils, but do not forget to buy some food before arrival as there is no supermarket in the village.

A great place to get to know locals. It is a step back in time to 20 or 30 years ago. surrounded by the beautiful nature of Gerês. The host were friendly and accommodating. The pool allowed fun times and privacy.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Casa Albelo do Gerês and wished we had planned more time in Montalegre. The hosts were super friendly and very helpful in describing several hiking trails accessible directly from the property. The breakfast was excellent. Our room was modern and spacious. All of the rooms feature a great view of the canyons and lake below the property. The breakfast room, lounge area, and view balcony all share the great view. They have a nicely located pool with a view, but it was still coolish during our visit so we did not swim. The loop hikes from the inn down to the desert like lakeshore and around the verdant, well-watered countryside in the valley above the lake were some of the best we did on our extended walking-focused trip in Portugal. We also enjoyed exploring the narrow streets of Montalegre on foot. Note: there are two routes to the Casa Albelo do Gerês from the main highway. The shorter route goes through the village and was quite narrow for our larger than requested "free-upgrade" vehicle. The other route above the lake is longer, but easier to drive. We suggest calling the owners about access or walking through the village first if you have a larger vehicle.

The location of Casa do Castanheiro is absolutely fantastic, the view directly from the house is stunning. You see bare, wild mountains, with artificial lake at the bottom of the view. The house is well equipped in terms of multimedia (TV, audio, internet works reasonably well considering remote location). There is plenty of kitchen equipment! Bathroom is nice, not new, but well maintained and reasonably clean. Outeiro is located within borders of a national park, it is great for hiking and general tourism around the area. The hosts are not on site, but are very helpful at arrival and during stay, getting in touch was very easy!. Prior to arriving I read the reviews of the house, they mentioned tricky arrival/parking at the location. It is indeed very tight, but so is the whole village. Be prepared for very tight manouvers and cm level spaces between car and walls/steps/stones etc.
