Wat een pareltje, verscholen tussen de bergen. Mijn verblijf bij Let’s Go Guesthouse was precies wat ik nodig had: kleinschalig, persoonlijk en op een steenworp afstand van de Muur. Letterlijk – je loopt er in vijf minuten naartoe (of wordt gebracht door Lily’s man, als het regent 😉). Wat het écht bijzonder maakt, zijn de gastvrijheid en warmte van Lily en haar man. Alsof je even bij familie logeert. Bij terugkomst van de muur, stond er spontaan een bordje met mijn opgewarmde leftovers van gisteren (ik had de avond ervoor diner bij Lily besteld en het was homemade heerlijk, en veel voor mij) klaar als lunch. Zulke kleine gebaren maken het verschil. Ook het uitzicht mag niet onvermeld blijven: vanaf het terras en de kamers aan de straatkant kijk je uit op de bergen. Rust, frisse lucht, en het gevoel dat je heel even onderdeel bent van het dorpse leven daar. Kortom: zoek je een modern (zoveel technische snufjes) verblijf, oprechte aandacht en een perfecte uitvalsbasis voor een onvergetelijk bezoek aan de Chinese Muur? Dan zit je hier helemaal goed.

I had the best experience during my stay! The host was incredibly welcoming and helpful throughout. The location was perfect—close to everything I needed. The food was delicious and really added to the comfort of the stay. Highly recommended, and I would definitely come back again!

Simatai Great Wall Dexin Folk Restaurant ligt in Simataicun, op 31 km van Grote Muur van China - Simatai, en biedt gratis WiFi, gratis privéparkeren en uitzicht op de bergen. We were extremely happy with our decision to stay at this lovely family-run accommodation. The hosts were exceptionally kind and helpful. We were welcomed with warm smiles and a basket of fresh fruit, and on the day of our departure—when we were running a little late—they even offered us a free ride to the bus station. Such genuine kindness truly made our stay special. Our room was spotless, beautifully decorated, cozy, and perfect for a good night’s sleep. The beds were very sturdy and comfortable. The whole place has a peaceful family-home atmosphere, and it’s clear that the owners take great pride in keeping everything clean, comfortable, and welcoming. The property is set in a quiet little village with a couple of nice family-run restaurants just a short walk away. It’s about a 20-minute walk to Beijing Wtown and the bus station along a quiet paved path by the river. The walk is lovely, with beautiful nature views, and there’s even a small riverside park with towers and sculptures that light up beautifully in the evenings—great for photos. If you prefer not to walk, there are plenty of Didi drivers available at any time, and the ride to the accommodation costs only 10–14 RMB. For travelers coming from Beijing, I highly recommend taking the direct bus, which costs 48 RMB per person and takes around two hours to reach the Water Town Bus Station (cash only). The bus leaves from Dongzhimen Outer Bus Station (东直门外) at 09:00 and 13:00, and returns from Water Town at 12:00 and 17:00. Just wait beside the brown signboard that lists all departure times. Beijing Wtown itself is absolutely stunning—full of canals, traditional architecture, small cafés, restaurants, and even boat rides that glide through the waterways, making the whole place feel like a fairytale village. In the evening, when the lights come on, the scenery becomes truly magical. At 20:40 there is a drone show with the illuminated Great Wall in the background, which is unforgettable.

Mutianyu Great Wall Jingshan First House Boutique B&B is gelegen in Mutianyu, op 27 km van Chinese Muur - Huanghuacheng en 44 km van Ming-tombes. Absolutely amazing stay. Room was spacious and clean. Bed large and comfortable. Mickey is the perfect host! Super helpful. Picked us up from the base of the great wall for check in and then took us up in the morning helping with tickets!! The breakfast was amazing. The best one we had on our trip. The coffee was so good!! Would happily stay here again. Nice and close to the wall so very convenient. Highly recommend.

We had a fantastic stay at the Badaling Hotel — it felt like home the moment I walked in! David and May are incredible hosts who truly care about their guests. We originally came to see the Badaling section of the Great Wall, but it was packed with tourists — there was already a queue from the cable car! Thankfully, we decided to book a tour with David, a true history lover. He guided us to a hidden section of the Wall with absolutely no other tourists in sight — peaceful, breathtaking, and unforgettable. Later, he brought us to a local farm where we enjoyed a delicious lunch made with fresh, local specialties and even visited an ancient Stone village where we tasted "warrior liquor." Truly the highlight of my China trip! Don’t miss the chance to take a tour with David if you want the real Great Wall experience.
