It's a 25 minute or so drive to Matsushima Bay, which is well worth a visit (go to Oshima Island, it's magical) and an hour and a bit to Risshaku-Ji which is otherworldly. We only had time to do that, but there's plenty more you could do, and if you're visiting Sendai, give yourself more than the 2 full days we gave ourselves.
