Tegucigalpa, Honduras’ capital, is located in the highlands region, along with a number of historic hillside towns and the Mayan ruins of Copán. This ancient site needs around two or three days to appreciate properly, with numerous carved stelae (monuments) scattered around. There’s a good selection of accommodation in most major tourist spots, such as Tegucigalpa and Copán Ruinas. The majority are hotels, but you’ll also find apartments, hostels, villas and B&Bs.

We stayed at Boutique Hotel Puerta Azul in November and would definitely recommend this place. We received outstanding service throughout our stay. The hotel was clean, well maintained, and set in a picturesque garden right by the beach, with a long pier leading to the coral reef.
The hotel is located in a calm area, away from the lively, crowded, and noisy tourist spots. We personally didn’t spend much time on the hotel’s beach, as we were busy diving during the day, but we did enjoy using the SUP and kayak, which are free to rent from the hotel.
The food was delicious, and we will truly miss everyone from the staff. The owner is a fantastic person who genuinely cares about his guests. We had a couple of nice conversations with him.
It’s a great place for those who want to stay away from the crowds and truly relax, or for those who rent a car and occasionally go to the center for more options, then return to unwind in the evening and enjoy the peaceful mornings. You really feel close to nature here.
There is also a local bus service nearby, although we didn’t try it, and a small shop within a short walking distance. The hotel guests are not here by coincidence - they choose this place deliberately, which also makes it a wonderful place to meet interesting people.

Hotel Rio was the best experience we had so far during our Central America trip. The host Walter (and his wife) will be the kindest person you’ll meet, he does everything he can to make your stay unforgettable. He really takes the time for a thorough conversation or any questions you have about any topic.
We got upgraded for free to a bigger amazing room with very comfortable beds. The place has a clean pool, amazing views on the jungle and waterfall. The pickup service is much cheaper than a taxi and the tours are cheaper than the surrounding tour operators. Unfortunately we could only stay two nights due to our itinerary but wished to stay much longer as it is such a beautiful and quiet place.
Due to low season the restaurant of the hotel was closed but Walter even offered to do groceries for us. The kitchen is very well equipped with everything you wish for.
The place is very well maintained and clean and has several chill out areas with hammocks. Staying at Hotel Rio is not just a recommendation but a must ;)

The guy at the reception went over the top to help me with everything. He was always there when I needed to ask a question or request something. Tegucigalpa is definitely not the safest place on Earth right now, but I did feel safe in this hotel. The room was really big, and the AC was worked perfectly. Such a great stay! I rarely write reviews, but I felt like this place really deserved it!
