Turkmenistan is a land dominated by desert, with the Kopet Dagi Mountains (Many Mountains) to the south bordering Iran. The rugged landscape lends itself to adventurous activities such as horse and camel trekking, and hiking through the Kugitang Nature Reserve. With its opulent marble palaces, oversized gold statues and assortment of unique architecture, Ashgabat is a capital that knows how to put on a show. The first thing you’ll notice is the incredible amount of white marble buildings scattered all over, which can be seen from up to 1,290 m on the Turkmenbashi Cableway. The city is also home to a number of cultural sites, including the National Museum, Museum of Fine Arts and the Carpet Museum – home to the largest hand-woven carpet in the world. Apart from the lavish capital, you’ll find many other places of interest including Dashoguz – an old stop on the ancient Silk Route – and the mysterious ruins of Merv in the Karakum Desert. Accommodation is very limited but a small selection of hotels is available.
