The hotel is a rural country inn surrounded on three sides by farm fields. The pool is very nice and well maintained. It was a hot day so the first thing we did after arriving at the hotel was to take a dip in the pool. Later the same day we had a beautifully presented and delicious meal on the patio of the restaurant. It was so quiet and peaceful that we could hear the flames of the hot air balloons floating by in the distance. The views are amazing! While we were eating outside on the patio, we had a view of the gardens of Marqueyssac and Castlenaud-la-chapelle. The menu was all from local farms. The owners Lydie and Giles were very kind and helpful. We took a train from Bordeaux to Sarlat and then a taxi to the hotel. Taxi service is difficult to use here. We had reservations to take a canoe trip down the Dordogne starting at Dome but no way to get there. Lydie tried four different taxi services and they were all not available. She then spoke with her husband Giles, who is also the chef, and he gave us a ride to Dome in his own car and refused to accept any money. While we were at Canoe Loisirs, Giles spoke to the manager and arranged for them to take us back to the hotel. It was very gracious of him to do that for us.

The location alongside the single track railway line between Sarlat and Bergerac and close to the level crossing in the lane where the cottage is located - (hence the name 'La Barriere') - was absolutely delightful. There is a mill stream at the back of the cottage with plenty of water rushing through, although mid summer. For most of the day you could 'hear a pin drop' and the infrequent trains rumbled past at quite a slow speed, because of bends on this part of the route! The host 'Pierre' lives in the adjacent cottage and he met us on arrival - a perfect gentleman, with interests in wine, old cars and motor cycles, so there was always lots to talk about when we met outside during our 2 week stay - and the visit to his workshop was probably one of the highlights of our stay. The garden was very, very large, beautifully kept but not 'manicured' and the pool a welcome retreat when temperatures were sometimes over 40C! A perfect location in the middle of the Dordogne countryside but within 3 minutes drive of Beynac, where there is a general store selling everything you might need and excellent vegetables, a butcher we have known for years selling every type of meat, cold meats pies, quiche, roast chickens etc and next door a baker, open from a very early hour - we think 8.00am - with fresh bread, croissants and all you can imagine in a French Patisserie!

I was quite surprised by how much better this place than the listing, which already looks good! It's literally across from the castle of Beynac which is extremely lovely to wake up to every morning. The apartment is spacious and mixes old with modern very well, having everything you might need while also being in a beautiful old building. We travelled with two young kids and they made sure we had everything we needed for them, and there's not so much in the apartment for curious hands to break, which is great. It's also very well set up for extreme heat. The owner is lovely and so are the people working in the shop downstairs. We were afraid parking would be complicated but there's a parking lot right around the corner from the apartment (paid parking). I loved coming home to this place every evening during our holiday and would not hesitate to recommend!

We were worried the hotel office would be closed when we arrived much later than expected. But the door code and room key was waiting for us. Very clean, friendly staff, great breakfast.
