A 5-minute walk from Higashiyama Subway Station, Guest House Ga-Jyun features free Wi-Fi at the entire property. The wooden terrace has chairs overlooking the garden. We are small house with 5 rooms. Very nice place, great breakfast, nice staff, beautiful dog.

Such a beautiful layout, zen garden and great common areas that are very welcoming to use. The dorm room (at least mine) felt very considered with proper wooden stairs to the top bunks rather than ladders - something that I appreciate for a late night visit to the toilet or for those that have had a late night drinking.

Shin was a fantastic host - helping me throughout my stay and making me feel extremely welcome. He has fantastic English and goes above and beyond with everything he does. The room was unbelievably clean and the bed was comfortable. The shared kitchen was always spotless and had all the equipment you would need (and complimentary coffee!). While not close to the main attractions in Kyoto, the accommodation is a two minute walk from the Metro so there is no real issue.

We spent 7 nights at this guesthouse, and it was an important part of our wonderful experience in Kyoto. The couple that runs the guesthouse became friends with us. They fed us a delicious breakfast of eggs, bacon, toast, and cabbage salad, which we enjoyed every morning. We had a great time talking with the wife (who can speak English conversationally) every morning, as well as the three other couples who came and went during our long stay. This guesthouse is definitely for people who enjoy the experience of meeting other travelers, want to learn about Japan from their hosts, are looking for a getaway from the big cities, and don't mind walking about 20 minutes to and 20 minutes from (uphill) the closest train station. It's not for people who want a reclusive getaway, don't like walking long distances, are looking for a normal hotel experience, or can't navigate steep stairsteps. This guesthouse allows you to live around the locals in a quiet, non-touristy neighborhood. Our twin room was very spacious compared to our budget hotel room in Tokyo, had a traditional feel to it, and was quite comfortable on hot days with the wall-mounted AC. Going to the bathroom or toilet room does involve walking a few steps out onto the balcony attached to your room, but with the house being high in the hills, it still feels reasonably private. This guest room is next to the one other guest room at this property, so you do need to be aware of noise levels. Below the guest rooms is a vacant art gallery space that serves as a large common area that's currently available to guests but may not always be if it's being used as a gallery. Attached to the gallery is a large patio with a view of Kyoto — a great place to sit in the morning or while eating dinner. If you're looking for a wonderful stay in Kyoto that's a little out of the ordinary, and you're an active traveler that wants to experience the non-touristy side of the city, this may be your place.

Everything was amazing, the hostel were comfortable and quite, location is perfect being only 2 minute away from Shirakawa river, and the shower room is equipped with everything such as shower cream, lotion, shampoo, conditioner . You also get fresh towel everyday and sandal during the stay.

R Star Hostel Kyoto Japan is set in central Kyoto and features air-conditioned rooms. The property is around 2 km from Samurai Kembu Kyoto, 2 km from Nijo Castle and 2.5 km from Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Very clean, big shared kitchen and great free breakfast
