La Plante is an ancient hamlet on the left bank of the Meuse between Wépion and Namur (in the Walloon region of Belgium). Today, it is part of the town of Namur, forming a suburb as it exits towards Dinant. The district stretches the length of the road between Route Nationale 92 (Namur-Dinant) and Avenue de La Pairelle, right on the banks of the Meuse. The construction of the lock on the Meuse (known as 'La Plante') in 1850 made a major contribution to the development of the hamlet. A park covering more than two hectares was then created on the banks of the river - the Parc de la Plante - at the level of the Île Vas-t'y-frotte. This park was chosen by Leopold I to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Belgian independence in 1855. The Parc de la Plante has been listed since 1989 for its aesthetic appeal, and is still the setting for a wide range of cultural and tourist events. The Île Vas-t'y-Frotte, Belgium's largest river island (700 metres long), is located just off La Plante, in Namur. The La Plante lock is the last lock on the Meuse before the town of Namur.
