At all times its marked seafaring character is present, its historical function as a defensive fortress and its current role as a city of services dedicated to commercial and mercantile relations. In the heart of the capital of Lanzarote is the Charco de San Ginés, an inlet of sea water around which the first fishing village of the island arose. Because of the presence of the Charco, Arrecife was once called the Venice of the Atlantic. Remodelled according to a project by César Manrique, the Charco is a landmark of the city. It is currently used for anchoring small boats. Around it there is a wide range of bars and restaurants and a very good atmosphere. The Puente de las Bolas (Bridge of the Balls) is a cobbled bridge that served as access to the Castle of San Gabriel. Built in the 16th century, its 175 metres connect the castle with the mainland. Today the fortress has been converted into a museum of the history of Arrecife. El Reducto beach is a natural beach protected by a reef, which is visible at low tide. It is an urban beach, with fine golden sand, 500 metres long and calm waters. It has a promenade and services. Marina Lanzarote is an innovative marina, its pleasant promenade is equipped with a full range of shops and leisure and dining activities. El Almacén Cultural Innovation Centre is a peculiar enclave of living culture located right in the centre of Arrecife.
