During the Muslim era, the hill of El Ejido was used as a pasture for the cattle that supplied the city. Later on, the area was used for the extraction of clay with which tiles and bricks were made, and this function is what gives its name to the current streets of Tejeros and Tejares. During the 16th and 17th centuries it was a place for the collective burial of the numerous victims of the epidemics of the time. The economic crisis suffered by the province of Malaga, as a result of the phylloxera plague and the collapse of the steel industry at the end of the 19th century, turned El Ejido into a shantytown area where immigrants from rural areas settled. Over time, the new settlers proceeded to build caves, which lasted until the 1950s.
