The village of Aubazine is perched on a sunny promontory. Houses, shops and hotels are grouped around a shaded square, near the old abbey to which the town owes its existence. This abbey church was built in the second half of the 12th century. It is a Romanesque Cistercian creation which adds to the quality of its architecture that of its furniture: One can discover there, among others, a famous liturgical cupboard, the tomb of the founder, Saint-Etienne d'Obazine as well as a virgin of pity of the fifteenth. The abbey buildings, gathered around the garden of the old cloister, still offer intact, the chapter house and the monks' working room.
