Featuring a trampoline, hammock & BBQ, this gem of a gîte for 5 persons is in the heart of magical St.Guilhem le Désert. Situated a few steps from the medieval Abbey of Gellone, this charming house comes fully equipped and is newly renovated with style and sympathy to the history of this legendary village. Set on three floors, this lovely home will provide you with all the comforts you need for a restful stay. Wifi, linen, coffee/tea are all provided free of charge. The gîte has stunning views from every window and is surrounded by birdsong. There is fresh mountain spring water on tap, only a step from your door. It tastes amazing. Relax in your private garden, with a cold glass of local rosé, and admire the ancient Abbey of Gellone. Snooze on the giant 2-person hammock. And with trampoline, basketball, archery and lots of summer games equipment, your kids will be happy all day. At night, all you shall hear is the gentle gurgling of the river Verdus, as it winds its way to join the magnificent Hérault. And the chatter and songs of birds. No cars, no traffic, no stress. Please note that the gite has 3 floors, with the lobby and toilet at the bottom, the kitchen on the second level and the two bedrooms (one with en-suite shower) at the top. The gite is not suitable for those with walking difficulties. The house has one permanent security gate installed and a portable gate which can be installed for the top floor bedroom. I am an easy-going 63 year old. I have two wonderful children and we all love this legendary village. I like to take walks along the river, hike the mountain paths or kayak and swim with my family. St. Guilhem le Désert is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France ("The most beautiful villages of France”). This mystical medieval village, built in the 8th & 9th century, is situated at the end of the narrow Valley of Gellone, where it meets the steep sided gorge of the Hérault River. Vineyard and olive trees are planted in terraces on the slopes. The stunning Abbey of Gellone, founded in 804 by William of Gellone, is the centre-piece of the village and where William was buried in 812. Still a working abbey, the Abbey of Gellone hosts many musical and choral evenings during the Summer months. The village lies on the St. James's Way pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostella. To pay tribute to Saint James, who had quelled the Moors invaders, medieval pilgrims journeyed to the very northwestern tip of Spain, the end of the known world at that time. Today, pilgrims and hikers still walk St. James's Way. They follow the G74 hiking route, climbing to the Hermitage of Notre Dame du Lieu Plaisant & along the Le Cirque de l’Infernet, massive limestone cliffs which rise to 535m (400m above the village). The views from this point are simply spell-binding.
