A 4.5 mile drive south is Richmond, a thriving market town with eateries a plenty and its very own Norman Castle, Richmond Castle with spectacular views overlooking the fast flowing river Swale; The Georgian Theatre Royal, the oldest working theatre in its original form; and The Green Howards Museum, telling the fascinating story of this distinguished regiment. Grab a bite to eat or watch a film at The Station Cinema. A 10 minute drive away is Barnard Castle, an historic market town on the banks of the River Tees, home to The Bowes Museum which hosts various exhibitions throughout the year. Heading further into the Durham Dales The Raby Castle Estate is a fine example of a medieval castle, and High Force Waterfall, one of the most spectacular waterfalls in England. A 30 minute drive south will lead you into the heart of The Yorkshire Dales National Park, where you can find many walks with beautiful scenery including Aysgath Falls; you can finish off the day with a cup of Yorkshire Tea and sweet treat at The Mill Race Teashop. A little further afield to the west is Hawes, the home of The Wensleydale Creamery, where you can taste and watch how the local Wensleydale Cheese is made. The Dales Countryside Museum gives an insight into local lives and landscape. For a scenic drive home, head over the Buttertubs Pass, a high road that winds its way over the heather clad fells into Swaledale. A drive down the valley, following the River Swale through traditional Dales villages back to Richmond, or a trip up to The Tan Hill Inn, the highest pub in England.
