The community is located along the River Ribble, close to its intersection with the River Hodder, 5 miles (8 km) from Longridge and 6 miles (10 km) from Clitheroe. Although many locations in the UK assert to have influenced J.R.R. Tolkien's creation of Middle Earth, the author undoubtedly spent a significant amount of time at Stonyhurst College writing on The Lord of the Rings during the Second World War.
