Walk out to the right and you will reach Alnwick Castle and the town’s marketplace within five minutes. Or continue down the Peth to the splendid pastures alongside the river Aln. Walk to the left and you will find Alnwick old Abbey and the Duke’s superb Capability Brown Hulne Park, also within minutes. Fiona & Michael divide their time between Alnwick and Arisaig on the north West Coast of Scotland along the spectacular Road to the Isles. They have a second holiday letting apartment in Arisaig affording a complete contrast to Baileygate House. Fiona & Michael have four grown children leaving them more time to indulge other interests. Michael is a keen gardener and Fiona keeps bees. They both mostly like to spend their time on the water messing about in kayaks.

Northumberland is an open expanse of inspiring landscape, where big open skies and wide vistas have stirred the creativity of Turner and Sir Walter Scott. As a northern heartland, evidence still stands of Romans, border reivers, spiritual worshippers and defenders of frontiers currently so fashionable with film and tv producers from Netflix to Amazon Prime, notably The Last Kingdom. Alnwick Castle most recently featured in Transformers: The Last Knight, and as the magnificent Brancaster Castle in Downton Abbey. Having already featured as Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter films, as well as appearing in Elizabeth and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, among others, the castle is no stranger to film crews. From Alnwick you can day trip as far as Edinburgh and Durham, or dawdle with ease inland up the Coquet valley to Rothbury and Cragside House. Going north, visit Wooler, or Ford and Etal to see the steam railway and working water mill. Another half an hour and you are easily striking the famous frontier of the Roman Wall and the Scottish borders. Other great places around Northumberland include Wallington Hall, the Cheviots and the Pennine Way.
