Barmouth Originally, Barmouth was a tiny hamlet built almost entirely on the rock over-looking the river mouth and frequented by pirates. The sea receded, access improved and a small fishing and ship building industry grew. In the 19th. Century the railway came and Barmouth and almost immediately it embraced tourism and expanded. Situated on the edge of the Snowdonia national, Barmouth was awarded the Green Coastline award for its clean beach environment and water. There is a great selection of shops eateries and pubs. The mountains for roaming are very close, plus numerous lakes and rivers close by. If you prefer a guided walk the annual walking festival at Barmouth held in September is popular every year. Barmouth has a sunny west-facing sandy beach. Don't miss the spectacular sunsets over the bay. From early Spring through till Autumn, dolphins and porpoise can be spotted close to the shore, an amazing sight to see! It’s not unusual to see them on a daily basis in pods of up to 20. There is level access to the town where there are supermarkets, shops, bistros. You will find the most glorious ten mile expanse of sandy beaches from Harlech to Barmouth. Remember to bring your bikes, the cycle routes are fantastic and Coed-y-Brenin has some very interesting daredevil paths to concur. Visit quaint villages such as Llanbedr, the gateway to Shell Island and Llandanwg with its Celtic church in the sand dunes. Just a few miles North is the historic town of Harlech with its magnificent castle and golf course. Don't miss a trip to Llanfair slate mines where "The Last Knight" was filmed, learn how hard the colliers of Yesteryear worked. Portmeirion village, just 30 mins drive is gorgeous, (the Italian style village where The Prisoner was filmed).
