Edinburgh's old town is a fascinating place, steeped in history and built on top of even older history - you can still visit whole streets under ground. The Royal Mile connects Holyrood Palace at the bottom of the hill and Edinburgh Castle at the top. The flat sits roughly in the middle of both. You couldn't get more central without getting into a debate about where the centre really is. The old adage that all Scottish food is based on a dare is out dated - there are a host of great restaurants nearby from cheap eats to Michelin starred (book way in advance). Despite being so central, the street is relatively quiet. All the main attractions are a short walk away.
