In the 16th century, the cottage started its life as a simple timber, wattle and daub, thatched property, with a hole in the roof acting as a chimney. Families would sleep in the upper space, using a makeshift ladder, whilst animals would sleep downstairs. During the 17th century, a staircase would have been made, to give better access to the upper floor. The cottage was extended in the 18th century, when a bread oven was installed in the inglenook fireplace. This is what gave the cottage its name Batchcott (bread supplied/cottage).
