You will recognize Veli Lošinj as soon as you arrive at the harbor by the tall, colorful houses and luxurious villas in which about 1,000 inhabitants live, which makes it the second largest settlement on the island. You may be confused by the names Veli and Mali Lošinj, but the fact is that Veli used to be really bigger, while Mali Lošinj developed faster, just the names have remained unchanged. The park in Veli Lošinj has more than 200 botanical species and the whole island has been known as a climatic health resort since 1885, when numerous famous people visited it to be treated. Opt for a walk or bike ride to the nearby fishing port of Rovenska, a visit to the Providence viewpoint and the Apsyrtides educational trail (the Greek name for the Cres-Lošinj islands), or for the unavoidable dolphin watching. Dolphin Day is celebrated every year on July 1 in Veli Lošinj.
