As an adventurous young Dutchman Gerard, alias Kireet, travelled the world over with his friend in 1970s. After deciding to make Auroville his home, he became instrumental in water conservation. Understanding the value of education, he created a school for the local Tamil children. Kireet has been working in the garden in his entire life. He created the first Gaia's Garden in the Netherlands. Auroville's Gaia's Garden was created from scratch of cashew field and became mature.

Gaia’s Garden is a small ecological community of Auroville. It is one of the most beautiful flower gardens in South India, a sanctuary for exotic tropical plants spreading over 2.67 acres. It is one km from the Bay of Bengal, five km from Matrimandir and seven km from Pondicherry. There are ten double bedrooms and two suites surrounded by lovingly tended garden. 2 units have their own kitchen, 3 units have private terraces. The other rooms have shared kitchen, dining hall and shared terraces. We strive to offer our guests an oasis of serenity and beauty, no drugs, no alcohol or no smoking are permitted and silence is expected after 10 pm. We are one of Auroville's closest guesthouses to the beach and to the city of Pondicherry.

Auroville was created as an international township in 1968, and the members come from 50 different nationalities. Inspired by Sri Aurobindo’s teachings, it is not an ashram but an experimental community, replete with the many challenges common to all, that that strives peace and unity and a better humanity. Its diversity is evident in the multi-ethnic restaurants, film festivals, world music, theatre, fine arts and handicrafts and we are tolerant to the others. Concern for ecology is paramount and found in organic farming, reforestation, rainwater harvest, sustainable working units, e-vehicles, and garbology. One can meditate in the Matrimandir, the Soul of Auroville. At the Information Center you can see entire timeline of Auroville. The city of Pondicherry is 7km away. Its attractions include White Town with its elegant French ambiance, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, the seaside Promenade, varied bazaars and local Indo-French cuisine, and a Sunday Market located at the intersection of Mission and Gandhi streets.
