Calatabiano is an Italian municipality in the province of Catania. Calatabiano is located 2 km from the Ionian Sea, while to the north its territory is bounded by the Alcantara River. Its origins are very ancient: it was built by the Saracens and then passed under the Norman reign of Roger. Over the centuries, the town belonged to various noble families up to the Gravina family. Calatabiano's economy revolves around fruit growing: loquats and citrus fruits are mostly produced in the area and exported. Tourism is due to the presence of Calatabiano's lido, the San Marco beach. Several kilometres long, with acacia and eucalyptus trees covering the shoreline here and there, the Calatabiano beach is dark in colour and consists of sand and pebbles. For most of the coastal stretch, the beach is free, but there are parts equipped with umbrellas and sunbeds. In addition to being a seaside resort, the area allows the tourist to range of activities. In fact, near the beach of Calatabiano, there is the town of Taormina, 15 km from the accommodation, where it is possible to take long walks immersed in history, art and entertainment; 34 km from Mount Etna, a scenic/naturalistic stop not to be missed, also for the spectacle offered by the volcanic crater in continuous activity. 11 km away are the splendid and unique Alcantara Gorges, where you can admire a spectacle that is unique in the world: a canyon originated by the cooling phenomena of ancient lava flows, up to 50 metres high and furrowed in the centre by the icy waters of the river. The village of Calatabiano is 48 km from Catania airport and therefore easily reachable thanks to the railway station on site.
